In a statement jointly issued by the IOC and the Control Board, the organi- zations said they would trade informa- tion to protect gamblers and the integ- rity of the sports. Sports books can take wagers on Olympic competitions, but the market is relatively small compared with col- legiate and professional football and basketball. Brannman left UMC last month after nearly three years as CEO to take an ex- ecutive position at St. Rose Dominican Hospitals. Barnard, who was second in com- mand at UMC, was supported unani- mously by commissioners. "Brian, you picked a good COO when you brought (Barnard) in. That's part of why there's a comfort level with him moving forward," Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani said. "We're all surprised by your leaving, but you've done a good job of stabilizing." Brannman was hired at UMC in 2008 to serve as chief operating officer and was chosen to take over as CEO in 2011; he earned an annual salary of $243,422. Prior to joining UMC, he spent much of his career working in health care for the Navy. Commissioner Lawrence Weekly, who chairs UMC's board, said much of the re- sponsibility for finding a replacement will be delegated to a newly formed inde- pendent governing board. The ultimate hiring decision will still remain with the County Commission. health care commissioNers Name iNterim ceo at umc against irregular and illegal betting in sports," board member Shawn Reid said in the statement. "Nevada is regarded throughout the world as the gold standard in gaming regulation and part of that reputation is tied to the board's tireless efforts to thwart illegal and irregular betting," Reid said. IOC Communications Director Mark Adams said information supplied by Ne- vada sports books would be used by the organization's Integrity Betting Intelli- gence System. The collaboration builds on an earlier agreement signed prior to the summer Olympics conducted in London in 2012. In the past, irregular betting patterns detected by sports books have uncov- ered point-shaving schemes involving collegiate and professional basketball players. Nevada casinos have assisted the NCAA and the NBA uncover cheat- ing in the past. 20140203_VI11_F.indd 11 1/30/14 12:01:18 PM
