Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service I buy in to Valentine’s Day in my own way. I like to keep it a friends and family love day. I love Unwanted clothing will be donated to a local charity. RSVP Facebook at O-Town Scene OR e-mail editor@otownscene.com 2 O-Town Scene Feb. 10, 2011 giving my inner circle cutesie cards and choc- olate, telling my friends and family I love them and wearing red and pink together. Feb. 14 also happens to be my brother’s birthday, and it was always more about family than romance growing up in the Miller house. Although I have accepted roses and candy from special men on Valentine’s Day, my dat- ing history is rocky this time of year. Not one, but three of my past romantic entanglements have ended shortly before or on Valentine’s Day. One occasion was when I was liv- ing in Italy, where the holiday is strictly for lovers. It didn’t stop my single Australian, New Zealand and Virginian roommates and I from having a non-romantic dinner in an Italian sea of tables for two. Being single on Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean watching “The Notebook”alone with a carton of ice cream and box of tissues. We celebrate singledom with a playlist that several people contrib- uted song ideas for on Page 17. There’s also some dating advice collected from a handful of women in their 20s (aka my friends) who have been single in Oneonta. For people who have love partners, there are some fun date ideas on Page 16. And for anyone who loves smooth voices sans instruments, there’s The Persua- sions. The group is legendary in the world of a cappella, which is hot right now thanks to TV shows like “Glee” and “The Sing- Off.” SUNY Delhi is hosting a free concert of the group Feb. 19, and the Scene got to talk to one of the group members. Also in this issue, the Scene profiles a fash- ionable couple and their business partner in an Oneonta-based vintage clothing operation they are hoping to expand. The three are SUNY Oneonta students, as are our Scene columnists this week: Sam Spokony and Jennifer Tighe. The two present their modern opinions on ideas presented in a recent New York Times article on how successful women have trouble finding love. You’ll probably want to shout “Girl Power!” after reading them. As always, there are lots of events this week _ particular ones to be a part of are the Beardoff, the Cooperstown Winter Carnival and the Scene Clothing Swap. See Editor’s picks at the back of this issue for more info. If you’re in a couple or not, Happy Valen- tine’s Day. Spread the love. _ Cassandra Miller
