LOOKING BACK
DOWNTOWN
IN THE '60S
O
nce a small desert outpost, Las
Vegas became a
bustling town in
the 1930s when construction
of the Hoover Dam began.
Thirty years later, the city
had a population of more
than 60,000, and to improve
economic prosperity, thousands of dollars was spent
to connect Las Vegas Boulevard with Interstate 15.
Above is an aerial view of
the construction link nearly
completed in 1968. At left is a
look at Fremont Street before
it was converted into a canopied pedestrian attraction.
