Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service Managing Editor’s Note Lunar New Year starts Feb. 3, and it’s the two-week- long party of the year for many Asian cultures. There’s an abundance of food, red envelopes filled with money, lanterns and more. This year is the Year of the Rabbit. Those of you who eat Chinese food may be familiar with the Chinese Zodiac, which is on a rotating 12- year cycle with an animal representing each year in the cycle. We’ve combined various descriptions of traits sup- posed to be held by those born in each animal year on Pages 16 and 17. I like to define myself by the positive characteristics of my zodiac sign (and ignore the negative traits). My Chi- nese Zodiac sign is the Rat, which means I’m charming, quick-witted and have excel- lent taste. Why, thank you, Chinese Zodiac. I sometimes assess my 2 O-Town Scene Feb. 3, 2011 friendships and relationships according to astrological signs, too (except when people I like are not signs I’m most compatible with). Apparently, I should be spending my time with the Dragon, Monkey or Ox; and I should avoid a third of the zodiac signs. It’s fantastic when the stars align and my friends and love interests end up fitting the mold, but I can adjust if that’s not the case. It’s just fun to make connec- tions using the zodiac. Two of my colleagues found out that their significant oth- ers are, in fact, the signs they are most compatible with. All is right in the world. Enjoy reading descriptions of your sign and your loved ones’ signs. And back to Chinese food, our Local Eats retaurant feature is Bejing House, a top-notch option for celebrat- ing Lunar New Year. In this issue, we also high- light a long-time Oneonta com- munity member who passed away in 2010 _ Irwin Gooen, who many people remember as an interesting person. Visiting poet Michael Dickel (who is our Casual Chit Chat this week) is staying at Gooen’s house. Dickel is visiting the U.S. from Jerusalem, where he and his wife, Aviva, who is Gooen’s niece, live. It was a pleasure talking with Dickel and reading his memorial to his wife’s uncle. I hope you enjoy the fea- tures, too. _ Cassandra Miller
