As of press time Tuesday, influenza has hospitalized more than 100 Milwaukee residents, according to the Milwaukee Health Department. Young children and the elderly are usually hit the hardest; however, hospitalizations among the 19-to-64 age group are up 40 percent over a year ago. Meanwhile, the hospitalization rate for people over 65 is 63 percent lower than a year ago. To combat the illnesses, the Milwaukee Health Department and Mayor Tom Barrett are encouraging residents to get a flu vaccine. "I urge everyone over 6 months of age to visit their doctor, clinic, or pharmacy to get vaccinated today," Barrett said. "Even healthy people can get the flu and spread it to others, especially during this time of year when we gather with family and friends." Each year, an average of 20,000 children under the age of 5 are hospitalized due to flu complications. While influenza is one of the most common respiratory illnesses in the country, it shouldn't be taken lightly . It's easily spread through anyone who is sick that coughs, sneezes or even speaks. Symptoms to look for include fever, cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, muscle or body aches and fatigue, according to the Milwaukee Health Department.
