On Joe Schoenmann's Jan. 8 vegasinc.com story about plans to build the eight-screen Eclipse Theater, which would include bar service and a restaurant, in downtown Las Vegas ("Joe Downtown: With influx of residents, can a downtown theater thrive?"): Eight screens seems too ambitious. A theater with 3-4 screens and bar service like Alamo Drafthouse in Texas would be perfect. And who thinks 48 parking spaces for a 500-plus seat theater makes any sense? — drugdoc99 On Joe Schoenmann's Jan. 8 vegasinc.com story about the effort to bring a 288-room boutique hotel to downtown Las Vegas ("Joe Downtown: Developer planning boutique hotel downtown"): It will never happen. The problem in Las Vegas is that all the casinos downtown sell rooms so cheap because the competition is fierce, and subsidize them with casino revenue. With no casino to subsidize cheap room rates, it's unlikely they could command room rates high enough to make this project pencil out. In Seattle, Boston, Portland, Chicago or Washington, D.C., where you can get $200-$300 per night for a room, this type of project would be more viable. — vinnyvegas On Conor Shine's Jan. 9 vegasinc.com story about MGM Resorts International's plans for an arena on the Strip and the possibility of traffic congestion or parking issues ("MGM Resorts clears first hurdle on path to building arena on the Strip"): Adequate parking at MGM-owned hotels south of Tropicana? Have you ever tried to park at Mandalay Bay, Luxor or Excalibur on a weekend, even when nothing special is going on? It can be done but it isn't easy. But when there's a concert at Mandalay, it's next to impossible. So Borgel is saying there won't be any other special events at other MGM properties when the new arena has one? Kinda doubt it. Won't even go into the traffic issues since there's a pending development agreement with the county, but I'd wager that it'll be an absolute nightmare. Visualize the Thomas & Mack Center, when there's 18,500 people in attendance, and double — or more — that headache. — AmLowLife If the Monte Carlo and/or New York-New York hotels plan to be imploded in the next 10-30 years, I wonder what might happen to the arena? I guess it will be imploded or remodeled. Anyway, nice to see the Strip back in motion! — Cyrus Hojjaty Glad to see it. Five thousand construction jobs for two years, then 3,000 jobs running the place. More great things coming to Vegas. — Lee Yarbrough 19 1/16/14 1:47:01 PM
