The Press-Dispatch Focus on the money: Rules for organizing the office OPEN hOuSE How does a person accumulate so much junk in just one year? If you run a small business, you know what this means. Look around your office, your desk, your home, your car. You're probably surrounded by a whole lot of stuff. That's why, every year, you should take time to go through the ritual of cleaning out your office. Focus first on all the junk mail you get. To get organized, you must get rid of some of it, unless you think you might use it, then make a file for it and file it. Next go through all the papers, business cards, receipts, samples of products you never ordered, excess inventory and gifts you got that are too good to throw out but that you'll never use. The first, last and hardest rule of any cleanup is to get rid of stuff: "When in doubt, toss it out." Trash, recycle or donate. Receipts—The IRS accepts electronic copies of re- ceipts for almost everything, so scan and shred all those restaurant and gas receipts that are laying around. Check your smart phone app store for one of the many smart-card receipt or business card scanners. Keep in mind, you want more than just an image. Shred anything that has personal or financial information on it. Next, organize your office space. Look around. What haven't you used in a while? Take one area at a time. If it doesn't work, send it out for repair or toss it. If you haven't used it in months and can't think of when you'll actually need it, out it goes. This goes for furniture, equipment, supplies, etc. Gather and redistribute every item that isn't where it belongs and put it where it does. Position the equipment and supplies that you use most within reach. Things that you rarely use can be stored or put away. Real Estate transfers Robert E. Perry conveys to Robert E.
