The Press-Dispatch HOT WIN B-5 PAC basketball standings Continued from page B-1 just frustrated with all of the fouls." "We just had to sit down and say we're going to have to get stops," Graham continued. "If you want to win the game, whether you've got fouls or not, we're going to just have to play defense hard and play smart and we're going to have to go back to being aggressive, and they did. They found a way to win." "We just decided that we weren't going to lose the game," agreed Howes, who also blocked six shots. "We just wanted to get out and play harder and get more deflections. Because once you get a couple of deflections and steals, you just feel like going down there and scoring." South Spencer, which fell to 29 overall and 0-2 in the PAC, took an early 6-0 lead on a basket and a pair of free throws by sophomore Justice Taylor and a basket by senior Sarah Lindsey. However, Pike Central came roaring back, scoring eight straight points, including six by Howes, to vault ahead 8-6 with 4:17 left in the first period. After Lady Rebel sophomore Madison Bunch scored to tie the game at 8-8, Abbott hit a threepointer and sophomore forward/ center Samantha Halbrader hit one of two free throws to give the Lady Chargers a 12-8 lead with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter. South Spencer answered by scoring seven straight points, on a basket by senior Chandra Shroeder, two free throws by Lindsey and a three-pointer by sophomore Maddie Dawson, to surge ahead 15-12 with 1:04 left in the opening period. Pike Central would fall behind by as many as seven points, at 2619, before a pair of three-pointers by Howes and a putback by Abbott sparked an 8-2 scoring run that slashed the deficit to 28-27 with 1:32 remaining in the second quarter. The Lady Rebels, however, would score eight consecutive points, the last four points of the first half and the first four points of the second half, to extend their lead to 36-27. Then, after Halbrader hit a pair of free throws to pull the Lady Chargers to within 36-29, South Spencer rattled off eight straight points on baskets by Shroeder, Lindsey, junior Kerrigan Shrouds and Dawson to take a 44-29 lead with 4:57 remaining in the third period. A layup by Halbrader and a three-pointer by Howes cut the Lady Rebels' lead to 44-34, but South Spencer answered with a basket by Shourds and a three-pointer by Dawson to re-establish a 15-point lead, at 49-34. After Graham called a timeout, a pair of free throws by Howes was answered by a basket by senior Kara Kraus, leaving the Lady Rebels with a 51-36 lead. South Spencer turned the ball over on its next three possessions, including once each on steals by Abbott and junior guard Kimberly McCammon which the Lady Chargers converted into a pair of baskets by Whitehead and one by McCammon to cut the deficit to 51-42 heading into the fourth quarter. "Those buckets there gave us a little momentum because it made it more realistic on the scoreboard, that we could look up and see it was single digits and we've got an opportunity," Graham said. "That helps." After Abbott opened the fourth period with a steal, Halbrader hit one of two free throws to pull the Lady Chargers to within 51-43. South Spencer then re-established a double-digit lead when Wednesday, January 8, 2014 High School Boys' Basketball Pike Central High School junior Lindsey Nixon (41) and South Spencer junior Kerrigan Shourds (right) battle for control of a rebound during game action on Saturday, Jan. 4. The Lady Chargers posted a 72-66 overtime win over the visiting Lady Rebels. Ed Cahill photo. Taylor scored on a putback to give the Lady Rebels a 53-43 advantage with 6:57 remaining in regulation. Putbacks by Howes and Whitehead cut the deficit to 53-47 with 5:25 left. After Taylor scored to extend South Spencer's lead to 5547, a basket by McCammon and a pair of free throws by Howes cut the gap to 55-51. With the Lady Rebels leading 57-53 with 1:58 left in regulation, Dawson missed the front end of a one-and-one, and 10 seconds later Whitehead buried a three-pointer from the top of the key to pull the Lady Chargers to within 57-56. "A big three," Graham said. "For a freshman, that was a real big shot." South Spencer turned the ball over on its next two possessions, allowing Halbrader to tie the game with a free throw with 1:01 left in the fourth period. Following a Lady Rebel timeout, Lindsey hit a jumper to give South Spencer a 59-57 lead with 38 seconds remaining. After Pike Central turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, Kraus missed the front end of a one-and-one with 26.3 seconds left. When Howes missed a threepoint shot, Abbott grabbed the offensive rebound and put the ball in the basket, tying the game at 5959 with eight seconds left. A three-point try by Kraus at the buzzer was off the mark, sending the game into overtime. South Spencer turned the ball over on 13 of its last 25 possessions during regulation while hitting just three of nine field goal attempts and two of four tries from the free throw line. Pike Central won the tipoff to start the overtime period, with Whitehead tapping the ball to Abbott, and scored the first six points to take a 65-59 lead. After Lindsey hit a three-pointer to pull the Lady Rebels to within 65-62 with 1:05 left in overtime, Howes hit a pair of free throws with Pike Central High School sophomore Samantha Halbrader (5) goes up between South Spencer's Kerrigan Shourds (23) and Jasmine Taylor (35) during game action on Saturday, Jan. 4. The Lady Chargers defeated the visiting Lady Rebels in overtime, 72-66. Ed Cahill photo. 57.3 seconds remaining to extend the Lady Chargers' lead to 67-62. Shroeder, fouled with 48.6 seconds left, hit the first of two free throw attempts. When she missed the second try, however, she grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled again with 44.6 seconds remaining. Shroeder then missed both free throws, but South Spencer retained possession when a jump ball was called during the ensuing scramble for the rebound. Lindsey then attempted and missed a three-point shot, and Halbrader grabbed the rebound. After two free throws by Howes with 32.7 seconds left extended Pike Central's lead to 69-63, Shroeder hit a three-pointer, slashing the deficit to 69-66 with 11.4 seconds left. However, a free throw by Howes and, following a South Spencer turnover, two more by Halbrader in the game's final 10 seconds sealed the win. "The last minute and a half was a long minute and a half," Graham said. "We got the quick basket in overtime and then, when we went up four, I felt like, for about two minutes, they played like they were really, really down, and they rushed a few possessions, and that helped us. We did a good job of hitting the free throws late and taking care of the ball." Halbrader scored 14 points in the winning effort. She also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Whitehead, after being held to just two points in the first half, finished the game with 13 points, while Abbott, who dished out a season-high 11 assists, added eight points and three steals. McCammon, who netted four points, had a team-high five steals. Junior forward/center Lindsey Nixon, who scored two points, had seven rebounds. Howes, who made eight of 18 field goal attempts, including three of 11 tries from three-point range and sank 12 of 15 free throws, had five rebounds and three steals. "She shot the ball really well," Graham said. "They were running a lot of double teams, so we kept trying to run the play to her side, and every time they would run off of her, we'd try to have her flash to the open spot. We did a good job of finding her, and she did a good job of knocking shots down." Howes, who averaged 8.3 points per game during the first eight games of the season, is averaging 22.3 points per game over the last three games. "It's been frustrating, but I feel like I've been working harder," Howes said. "I know, as a senior, I'm a team leader, and I've just got to work harder getting open, and my team's helped me a lot, getting me more screens." "I feel like the beginning of the new year, we're working harder together, because we want to get more wins," Howes added. For the game, Pike Central made 23 of 53 field goal attempts, a 43.4 percent average, and hit 21 of 37 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 20 times. Lindsey paced South Spencer with 25 points, five assists and five steals, while Dawson, Shourds, Shroeder and Taylor added eight points each. Shourds, meanwhile, grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. For the game, the Lady Rebels made 23 of 49 field goal attempts, a 46.9 percent average, and hit 15 of 24 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 23 times.
