Everett continued to work for IPL. In 1981, he became a member of the outage team. He would travel to IPL plants having outages and work there. In that position, he came to Petersburg often, until 1996, when he and Michele moved to Petersburg. They made a life here. She went to work at the Deaconess Clinic in Petersburg and they raised three girls: Cassy, 33, Samantha, 28 and Amanda, 23. "I don't play on that level anymore. I'm probably a seven or eight handicap. I'm not going to play at that level, but my passion is still in golf. I want to work in the industry somewhere." That passion started 40 years ago. His father was playing in a VFW golf scramble and was short a player, so he grabbed his 15-year-old son to fill the open spot on his fourman team. "I fell in love with it that day, and I have played my whole life. "So that is why I'm going back to Professional Golfers Career College." Dave and Michele are in the process of selling their house on the back side of Lake Minnis addition and moving to Bluffton, S.C. "We are packing up lock, stock and barrel and moving to South Carolina," said Everett. Bluffton is the at the edge of the mainland, just before you get on the bridge to Hilton Head Island, S.C. "It is just like going back to my freshman year of college. My first semester I will be taking psychology, writing classes and even calligraphy." He will attend four semesters and graduate with an associate's degree in business, but with emphasis on the golf industry. He wants to do one of two career paths. He hopes to work in golf course management or his real dream, being involved in the design and building of golf courses. Everett's work experience with IPL as a construction manager and outage manager has given him experience in widely varying construction projects and in managing large crews, skills he hopes will help him ultimately get a job with a company that designs and builds golf courses. But to get there, he will have to get through the two year school geared toward a golf career. "I will be playing golf, taking "It has been a dream since I have been in my 20s. He knows it won't be an easy road. He hopes he can pass his Playing Ability Test after the first semester. "Getting that means I can get paid for giving lessons," said Everett. He said to pass it, he will have to play 18 holes in the morning and 18 holes in the afternoon on selected courses and have a combined score for the 36 holes of 14 strokes over par or less. "It has been a dream since I have been in my 20s. I just haven't had the opportunity. Working in the power industry is a 24-7, 365 days-a-year job. I have done well with IPL. It is time for her and I to go do something we want to do instead of something we have to do," said Everett. He has Michele's support. "I have the most forgiving wife in the world. I could not do this without her." Michele longs for a warm climate, that point is driven home by the minus 4 reading on the thermometer. "That is one of the most exciting things for us. We know where we are going to be the next two years. But after that, I don't have a clue," said Everett. Then he adds a caveat, anywhere warm. "It won't be somewhere that has January 6, 2014, Indiana weather." Ultimately, the Everetts would love to end up in southern California. "The weather there is 45 to 85," said Everett. "After 35 years of working, it is time. We have raised our kids and tried to give back to our community. This is something I have dreamed about for 35 years, so we are going for it." Dave Everett and his wife, Michele, are preparing for a new chapter in their lives. They are moving to South Carolina while he goes to the Professional Golfers Career College following retirement from IPL. Where Experience, Quality and Personal Attention Create Exceptional Smiles!
