In business education Berkley takes job with touro schools By Ana Ley staff writer Former Democratic congresswoman Shelley Berkley has been appointed to lead the Nevada and California campuses of the New York-based Touro College & University System. Berkley will replace Dr. Michael Harter as the new CEO and senior provost of Touro's Western Division. Harter started working for Touro in 2004, joining the Henderson campus at its inception. Berkley was picked after a national search for the position. Her appointment was approved in December, and school officials made an official announcement later that month. "(Berkley) is an accomplished professional, visionary, humanitarian and leader who has nobly served her coun- try and state," Touro President and CEO Dr. Alan Kadish said in a prepared statement. Berkley, a 50-year resident of Nevada, was the first person in her family to attend college. She graduated from UNLV with a degree in political science and then graduated from the University of San Diego's School of Law. Prior to her election to Congress, she served as a member of the Nevada State System of Higher Education's Board of Regents for eight years. Touro is a private, Jewish school system founded in 1970 with additional campuses in the New York area and in Berlin, Jerusalem, Moscow, Paris and Florida. Its Henderson-based school system in Nevada specializes in medical studies. banking a british Banking company is coming By Eli Segall staff writer A British banking giant is bringing a credit card call center to Zappos' former headquarters in Henderson. Barclaycard US, owned by Barclays, says it is moving 400 employees sometime this year into Green Valley Corporate Center, an office park off Green Valley Parkway just north of the 215 Beltway. The company says it will have 700 workers there by December 2015 and 1,000 when fully operational. It is renting about 91,300 square feet in two buildings, 2280 and 2290 Corporate Circle, according to Charles Van Geel, vice president of leasing and sales for landlord American Nevada Company. The Greenspun family, owners of VEGAS INC and the Las Vegas Sun, also owns American Nevada. Barclaycard, based in Wilmington, Del., is doing tenant improvement work for now but aims to be open for business by February, Van Geel said. Barclaycard is moving to town with a chunk of public money. In September, the Governor's Office of Economic Development approved a $1.87 million funding request from the company, which said it would use the money for furniture and fixtures in Henderson. The state funds will be paid out only after the company reaches, and maintains for at least a month, certain employment levels. Zappos was renting 156,000 square feet in three buildings at Green Valley Corporate Center. The online retailer moved into its new headquarters in old City Hall in September, bringing 1,500 employees to downtown Las Vegas. manufacturing Portable battery company finds success By Richard N. Velotta senior staff writer A local aircraft ground support company is doing so well it already has outgrown two buildings. Start Pac, which manufactures batteries and chargers used to start airplane and train engines, recently expanded to a 15,000-square-foot building on West Sunset Road. The company relocated to Las Vegas from Arizona in 2006 after considering California, Texas and Florida. Vice President Eve Storm said owners chose 20140106_VI11_F.indd 11 Las Vegas because out-of-town customers enjoy coming to the city for its entertainment and amenities. Start Pac moved from a 4,000-squarefoot facility to its new plant, which has 12,000 square feet of storage and floor space, as well as offices and a small gym for employees. Storm attributes the company's success to treating customers well and earning their trust with ethical business practices. Start Pac's signature product is a portable lithium ground power starting unit. FRIDAY, JANUARY 24, 2014 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Thomas & Mack Center - Cox Pavilion TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW!
