Central cruises in city rivalry By Tony Mooren Freeman Correspondent like this," he said. "It's easy to get sidetracked and lose focus, especially with a young team, but I think we have a different team this year. We're looking at qualifying for the team sectional and team state. I think we'll have a handful or more of qualifiers at the state meet and I want to take state, or at least place." Demos thought his team seemed a little flat but claimed it can be a learning experience. "I got a lot out of it, in that regardless of your opponent, you need to be mentally ready to wrestle," he said. "It is hard because they put the numbers together and know that they have the meet won before it even begins (with all the forfeits)." Dempsey, a returning conference champion for East, posted the Spartans' lone victory at 152 pounds – a 36-second pin – so the score was close, 7-6, in the three matches actually wrestled. "We'll just try to improve as best we can and we'll still look at our results at the end of the year," Veal said. Academy's Rauh a first-team all-state pick in field hockey BROOKFIELD – Brookfield Academy senior Grace Rauh was a first-team all-state pick on defense from the Wisconsin High School Field Hockey Association. Central's Dunn a second-team all-state golf pick BROOKFIELD – Brookfield Central junior Grace Dunn was a secondteam all-state pick by the state golf coaches association. Dunn finished fourth in the WIAA Division 1 state tournament and was the Greater Metro Conference Player of the Year. – Freeman Staff 235925001 BROOKFIELD – John Veal expects some things to go as usual for his Brookfield East High School wrestling team this season. But certainly not all things. When Veal greeted his incoming team this season, his arm wasn't overworked with handshakes. He has only 12 wresters on the team – varsity and junior varsity . "It took me by shock," he admitted. "I expected 20 to 25 guys to come out but seven varsity guys (from last season) didn't come out. A number of guys left the team for various reasons, which is disappointing but we have to work with what we have." What the Spartans had last month wasn't much with WIAA state-meet qualifier J.P. LeClaire injured and only three varsity wrestlers available in a Greater Metro Conference opening dual meet against crosstown rival Brookfield Central. The Lancers cruised 73-6. "It's hard as a coach to keep the kids in a motivated and competitive spirit," Cen- tral coach Chris Demos said. "It's hard to explain, but it's a crosstown rivalry that we've been hyping up for a long time and then we heard and saw the numbers East has. We've been in their situation so I know what they're going through." Veal still has expectations. "The goal is to keep getting the varsity guys better and improve the others so we have varsity-level wrestlers for next year," he said. "We have several talented eighth-graders coming up and we'll get the numbers back up. The guys who are here have a good attitude, and if you look at our history we have had state qualifiers 10 of the last 12 years. So our program's been strong, and we still have kids who have a bright future – like LeClaire and (junior) Josh Dempsey It's difficult . for them to not have a strong team, but they're still looking to be on the podium in Madison." Senior Josh Peltier of Central, who was a WIAA state qualifier last season, wrestled in one of the three actual matches and won 13-1. "We just try to keep everyone motivated in a match BROOKFIELD – Brookfield East juniors Matt Klassen, an outside hitter, and Adam Wessel, a libero, received high honorable mention on the coaches all-state boys volleyball team after the Spartans advanced to the state tournament for the first time. Honorable mention went to Brookfield East junior middle hitter Graydon Schroeder. "Hey Brookfield!" The Freeman has you covered! BELOW ZERO. CALL A HERO. Your News, not Milwaukee's SLICK ROADS.
