STEVE MARCUS $600,000 On Andrew Doughman's Nov. 21 lasvegassun.com story about the departure of UNLV President Neal Smatresk ("In replacing Smatresk, regents have certain kind of president in mind"): He realized the priorities here in Nevada and got out. Now he can simply take his resources with him to Texas, and eventually what was set in place will wither because there is no one his equal around who has the wherewithal to implement such programs. When Nevada has good people come, they are not treated right, only used. — StarAliMistriel The amount the UNLV Athletic Department will spend on tickets for the game against North Texas. On Rick Velotta's Nov. 21 vegasinc.com story about transportation changes that could make Las Vegas a more attractive place to live and visit ("Study: Rail transport to airport would make Las Vegas more desirable"): We paid for a study to figure this out? We need rail and reliable bus routes to and from the airport. Employees need cost-effective and reliable transportation. — Roslynda Anderson (Roslynda) $6 Obviously, the hotels with monorail stops should be committed to paying more to connect to the airport as they stand to gain the most. — peterf The starting price of a BoltBus ticket from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. BoltBus, a subsidiary of Greyhound Lines recently, added routes to Las Vegas and San Francisco from Southern California. It would be more beneficial if the Supershuttle were to expand service to the entire valley. — Clyde Perkins The amount UNLV football will be paid for participating in the Heart of Dallas bowl game Jan. 1. $400,000 | 23 DECEMBER 2013 20131223_VI19_F.indd 19 | With Las Vegas hoping to attract a higher-paying and longer-term international traveler, they prefer public transit, and many may not even have a driver's license, coming from many densely populated cities in the world. — Ben Lambert (NLVProg) Of course funding is the magic part of the equation, but if available the monorail could be planned to run down Las Vegas Boulevard from Cashman Field to McCarran and loop back up Maryland Parkway through UNLV and Fremont Street to start again at Cashman. With a continuous loop and maybe a side rail near both ends to park off the main line if need be, more than one train could be in service at one time providing frequent service for airport arrivals and departures. — USMC6591 With another building boom starting mid-Strip and north Strip, the congestion is only going to get worse. So is the pollution of all those cars stuck in traffic, and people walking the Strip having to breathe it. This is the obvious solution to that problem. It may even lead to further monorail expansion once it is fully utilized. Running a big ring around the Strip on both sides connected with the airport would be great for all visitors. The monorail doesn't have to contend with traffic or pedestrians. There is still a need for cabs, as not everyone will use the monorail. It's a win for Las Vegas in my view. — bimmerdude 19 12/19/13 11:15:30 AM
