In business philanthropy EDUCATION $10 million gift to bring Black Mountain Institute into 'new era of progress' UNLV, UNR on 'A-List' of top colleges based on academics, economics By Paul Takahashi staff writer By Paul Takahashi staff writer Former Nevada higher education chancellor and TV mogul Jim Rogers and his wife, Beverly, are donating $10 million to UNLV's Black Mountain Institute. With the gift, the university's literary institute, which hosts authors and writing programs, will be renamed the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute. "BMI has been part of Las Vegas' emerging cultural landscape for the last eight years," Harter, the institute's executive director and former UNLV president, said in a statement. "BMI has welcomed writers from all over the world as fellows, speakers and guest lecturers. The Rogers Family Foundation's generous commitment enhances BMI's offerings on every level." The foundation's gift will infuse between $500,000 and $800,000 a year into the institute's budget for 15 years. The donation would create a new Beverly Rogers Library and Reading & Room at the James E. Rogers Center for Administration and Justice where students and faculty can peruse literary magazines and journals. The institute also plans to resurrect its acclaimed City of Asylum program, which has been on hiatus the past three years. The program provides a safe haven for international writers whose voices are threatened by censorship, imprisonment or death. In particular, the donation would help create new housing for fellows. In addition, the gift will allow the institute to create the Black Mountain Institute Prize for Fiction, a biennial $50,000 award that will be judged by a panel of notable writers. The donation also will boost annual stipends for doctoral creative writing students and the institute's writers-in-residence, and fund several public reading series as well as UNLV's literary magazine. "Our gift marks the beginning of BMI's new era of progress," Beverly Rogers said. Hall Associates CPAs, LTD 39.6% Tax Rate ? Smart with Proper Deductions. Advice on Limiting Risk. The higher education website released its "A-List" rankings, which ranked 100 universities on three factors: academic quality, accessibility and affordability. UNLV came in 20th nationally and 10th in the West. The website lists UNLV's in-state tuition as $6,670 per year, its acceptance rate as 88 percent and its enrollment at 27,402 students. UNR came in at 17th nationally and ninth in the West. Its in-state tuition was listed as $6,154 per year, its acceptance rate as 83 percent and its enrollment at 18,227 students. Iowa State University was first, and the University of Utah was second. The "A-List" rankings do not include federal, state and institutional financial aid calculations. By including financial aid in the ranking's calculations, expensive and highly selective schools such as Harvard, Princeton and Yale often make other "bang-foryour-buck" rankings. Collegeatlas.org weighted academic quality, affordability and accessibility: n Academic quality (45 percent of the ranking's calculations) was based on the U.S. News and World Report's "Best Colleges" rankings. n Affordability (30 percent) was based on annual in-state tuition rates. Most students nationally pay under $10,000 annually for in-state tuition. n Accessibility was based on a university's acceptance rate (20 percent) and enrollment size (5 percent). Most "A-List" schools accept more than 80 percent of applicants. President Barack Obama this year suggested a new college ranking system that would judge universities "not just by which is the most selective, not just by which is the most expensive, not just by the one with the best facilities ... but by the one that is the biggest bang for the buck."
