How dangerous are black bears? What should I do if I see a black bear? The program will begin at 11am in the Visitor Center. Jan. 8 & 9, The Roles and Responsibilities of a NC State Park Ranger. What does a Park Ranger do on a day to day basis? Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 2pm. Jan. 15 & 16, Tracks. Join a Ranger to learn about common animal tracks and their makers. Come make your own tracks to take home. Program will include indoor and outdoor activities. Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 2pm. Jan. 15 & 22, Tree Cookies. Hold the milk please! Kids join a Park Ranger to learn about tree growth by looking at tree cookies. Learn how tree rings show patterns of change in a trees life as well as changes in the area where it grows. Program starts 11am at the Visitor Center. Jan. 22 & 23, Where am I? How to Use Map and Compass. Solid knowledge of basic map and compass skills are essential when traveling in the backcountry. If you have a compass bring it and test your skills in the field. Starts at 2pm at Jacob Fork Parking Area. Jan. 29, Skulls and Skins. Look for our interesting display of skulls and skins in the Visitor Center. Drop in between 2-3pm and hear about some of the animals that call South Moun- tains State Park home. Jan. 30, Wintergreen Hike. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the Hemlock Nature Trail and learn about some of the plant species that stay green year long. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 2pm for this easy one mile walk.
