Both the Milwaukee Public School district and St. Lucas Lutheran have plans for the 123-year-old red brick schoolhouse, 619 E. Dover St., that has sat empty for two years. MPS district officials on Nov. 19 gathered with the public to discuss their plan to convert the vacant school into housing for new teachers. The district wants the housing in order to attract and retain new teachers, said Gina Spang, director of facilities and maintenance for MPS. "We took a look at our assets and the Dover building in Bay View, and we felt that NEW LOCATION 729 S. 84th St. (414)257-9823 that was a facility that, based on the way it's constructed and where it's located, really lent itself to a nice conversion to teacher housing," Spang said. The Bay View location works well, Spang said, because it's in a walkable neighborhood with public transportation, a mix of housing types and mixed-use developments including shops and offices. And, as any school should, the district has done its research on other cities that have created successful teacher housing, such as Baltimore and Philadelphia. Possible elements of the Bay View teacher housing include green space, a tot lot, community garden, bike storage, parking, car sharing, sustainable building features, Stop By Today!!! 50% OFF LOCATION #1 5040 S. 27TH ST.
