The 2013 American Music Awards ceremony — traditionally a lavish, star-studded affair — is shaping up to be one of the best ceremonies in years. American music fans have been voting for their favorite artists online for weeks, and the winners will be announced when ABC broadcasts the main event live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, Sunday, Nov. 24. This year's nominees were announced Oct. 10 by Kelly Clarkson and will.i.am. The main categories were announced for the first time ever on ABC's "Good Morning America," while the remaining categories were announced later the same day. The two multi-platinum recording artists boast a combined total of 19 AMA nominations, stats that more than qualify them to be a part of the nominations process. In their pre-announcement interview, the pair discussed their respective humanitarian efforts and upcoming releases before moving to the "GMA" podium to announce the nominations. The duo have had a big year, with their single "Thrift Shop" dominating the charts through most of 2013. As of September, "Thrift Shop" had accumulated well over seven million downloads in the United States alone, making it the best-selling single in the U.S. to date (the previous title holder was Eminem, with his 2010 hit "Love the Way You Lie"). But many nominations won't necessarily mean a lot of wins. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have some major competition this year — hot on their heels with five nominations each are powerhouses Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake. Swift has had a banner year, as evidenced at the Country Music Awards on Nov. 6, where she was awarded the Pinnacle Award, which honors country music artists who have succeeded in topping charts worldwide. Her record-breaking album "Red" sold more than a million copies in its first week alone, and topped charts in many countries such as Australia, Canada, Ireland and even Taiwan. In past years, the AMAs have been very kind to Swift. She's been nominated a total of 13 times and has walked away with 11 of those awards. This year, Swift gives Macklemore & Ryan Lewis a run for their money in the Artist of the Year category, and dominates both the Rock/ Pop and Country categories.
