ENRIQUEZ Special to The Post MILWAUKEE – The assassination of President John F. Kennedy a half-century ago was profoundly traumatic to the emerging generation of baby boomers, yet his death left a legacy that helped pass landmark measures such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and anti-poverty legislation known as the War on Poverty according to two university educa, tors from Waukesha. University of Wisconsin-Waukesha associate professor of political science Joseph Foy and Carroll University history professor Charles Byler also weighed in on how Kennedy's election shaped the political map for decades to come and whether he would have been re-elected in 1964. Both men noted the assassination's effect on the post-World War II generation created via a spike in birth rates and newfound levels of wealth and prosperity . "The impact of the assassination on the political psyche of the country cannot be understated, but for many younger baby boomers, who were just coming of age politically JFK's assassination remains one of , their strongest and most vivid memories," Foy said. "In many cases the (young) would have seen adults around them, including perhaps teachers and parents, who were extremely distraught," Byler said. "If they watched tel- evision at all over the next few weeks, they would have viewed scenes of the president's motorcade heading into Dealey Plaza, the funeral in Washington, D.C., and the shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby .
