"It's complicated," Abele said of his relationship with the board and his role in making pivotal policy decisions. The most recent example could be the creation of the county's 2014 budget, which has not been without controversy since delibera- tions picked up steam in late September. Abele was invited to speak at a luncheon Nov. 7 hosted by online political news site WisPolitics.com. Jeff Mayers, president of WisPolitics.com, moderated the discussion and directly asked questions. Toward the end of the talk, audience members were invited to pose their own questions. Abele's relations with the County Board and Sheriff David Clarke have frequently been characterized as strained and have grabbed headlines. Abele readily acknowledges his frequent disagreements with some or all members of the County Board. "But there are great people on that board," Abele offered as a follow-up response. "Everyone's just really well intended." Clarke has openly chastised Abele and numerous members of the board as disagreements over policy matters within the Sheriff's office come to light. "Do we battle? Well, it takes two people to battle," Abele said. "I'm not issuing press Financing Available - Stop By Today!!! I believe there's a productive, diplomatic way of addressing things." Abele characterized Milwaukee County's current arrangement between his position and the County Board as "quirky It dates back to ." Abele the 1960s. Functions between the two sides of county government have gone under the microscope with increased prevalence. "It's been extremely frustrating lately ," Abele said of the divide. "I don't think the County Board should always be in agreement with me, but I do feel that there should be a defensible rationale for the decisions we make." When asked to elaborate further, Abele said some of the policy matters broached at the County Board level are, at times, counterintuitive. • The fleshy projection above the bill on a turkey is called a snood. • People who chase after rare birds are called twitchers. 235119070 ACROSS FROM STATE FAIR PARK OPEN: MON.-SAT. 10AM-7PM CLOSED SUNDAY 414-617-2109 414-587-0517 235519020 'It's complicated' Abele discusses relations with County Board, Clarke at luncheon 500 W.
