Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service Managing Editor’s Note A few friends and I went on a holiday wine tour in Ithaca last weekend. I’m not a con- noisseur of New York state wine, so I was looking forward to getting a taste or 60. Although I’m very good at drinking wine, I’m not going to be a sommelier any time soon. But, I do know what I like. I love me some sugar, but I’m not crazy about sweet wines. The drier the better, unless there are bubbles involved. 2 O-Town Scene Dec. 9, 2010 Of the tastings at the 10 wineries we visited, I enjoyed a majority of the offerings. The last wineries we visited seemed to have the best wines, but I think this might be more to my state of mine than any discerning factors. At the end of the happy trail, I had acquired a case of wine, which I will be bringing as hostess gifts to holiday parties in the coming weeks. The trail provided a dizzy- ing number of types of wines, and every server pushed his or her winery’s wines as the best of the best. I wanted to know what an outside expert might think of which New York wines are worth trying. For this week’s cover story, Liquor Depot owner Dwight Pier provided insight into New York wine (because, to be honest, I really wasn’t paying at- tention on the wine tour). He also told me what wines New York is known for, and suggestions of spe- cific wines to try. On Page 12, readers will find out where to get local artists and craftspeople’s goods, which are unique holiday gifts. Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds frontwoman Arleigh Kincheloe answered questions about growing up in the area and her band’s Cara Rosenberg Nichols, me, Santa, Emily Ernsberger and Emily Quacken- bush during a wine tour. show Saturday at the One- onta Theatre, which is the last show of the season for the venue. The Oneonta Theatre will start its 2011 season on April 1. As always, there are lots of events going on, and we’ve collected as many as we knew about. If you have an event you want listed, send an e-mail to editor@otown- scene.com. _ Cassandra Miller
