Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service Managing Editor’s Note It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Yeah, it’s a commercialized time of year with a lot of expenses. But, also, for a couple of months, people start thinking about who and what they’re grateful for, who and what they care about and what life changes they want to make (after too many glasses of champagne and a slurry rendition of “Auld Lang Syne”). Plus, there are presents and wassail and decorated trees and eight straight days of fun for a select few. Happy Hanukkah! I am, four years after graduating college, still receiving mail from the Hillel House at my univer- sity telling me about birthright trips to Israel and upcoming holiday meals at the student union. Little did I know that accompanying my Jewish friends to the free Yom Kippur dinner my fresh- man year would mean I would still be connected to a faith that is not mine eight years later. A lot of people _ Jew, gentile and other _ 2 O-Town Scene Dec. 2, 2010 get weepy over TV specials like “Miracle on 34th Street” or “It’s a Wonderful Life,” or in the Miller household, “Christmas Vacation.” Well, a few theater companies in Oneonta are putting on productions this month to turn those sentimental frowns upside-down. A new company, the Oneonta Theatre Stage Players, is opening its inaugural season with “A Don’t Hug Me Christmas Carol,” which is a modern- day spoof of Charles Dickens’ classic and set in Minnesota. Trevor Hayes talked with the cast and directors about the the show for this issue. Next weekend, Or- pheus Theatre is moving away from its mainstay musicals to present the straight play version of “A Christmas Story.” Many will be familiar with the beloved 1983 film version of the story. Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center will close out the One- onta holiday production season Dec. 18 and 19 with the one-act opera, “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” I’m thrilled that there are theatrical options every weekend leading up to Christmas. Options and variety are always a good thing. The Music People this issue are three ac- complished musicians who will be performing together during an informal show Thursday, Dec. 9, at the Autumn Cafe. Part-time locals with impressive musical resumes John Scapulla and George Kilby Jr. will be joined by British musi- cian George Breakfast, whose real last name is Bacon. Oh, those crazy Brits.
