Pie in the Sky At: 3883 State Highway 7 in Otego. Open: Wed. to Mon., from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Phone: (607) 432-3599 The right side of the store features the output of its farm. Two of fall’s hardiest treats _ apples and potatoes _ take center stage here in all different varieties. Farm fresh An intergalactic assortment of squash is stacked around these parts, as well as right outside the store. There are quiver-fuls of ornamental corn (a hand-written sign next to a set of strawberry ears advises the shopper to wait until winter dries the garnet-colored kernels before attempting to pop them). And what goes more cozily with fresh popcorn than a vintage VHS film? The store offers an ever- expanding archive of videos-for-rent, colonizing whatever spaces produce and crafts don’t occupy. Team Pie in the Sky is truly dedicated to taking customer requests, not to mention improving an already massively impressive video library. My own VHS success story began some weeks ago, as I called to ask about an obscure 1994 biopic of Nostradamus (creatively titled “Nostradamus”), not yet available on DVD. VHS isn’t dead Photo by Jemmy Delva They reported that they didn’t currently have it, but they were immediately on the case (not to mention the cassette). I didn’t have to be an upstate Nostradamus to guess that they’d get it. Sure enough I was living the dream a short while later. _ Sam Benedict Nov. 18, 2010 O-Town Scene 15
