Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service Managing Editor’s Note I went to a friend’s wedding in Kentucky over the weekend. Not only was I looking forward to seeing some college friends, but I wanted to experience all things Kentucky _ boubon, horse-racing, Colonel Sanders and bluegrass music. Bourbon? Check, check. Fried chicken? Why that happened to be one of the dishes at the wedding. Horse-racing? My taxi-cab driver was happy to swing by Churchill Downs so I cuold get a glimpse of where the Mint Julep- big hat-horse action happens. But what I missed out on was the bluegrass music. The closest I got to listening to some Ameri- cana stringdusting was when we were buying booze at CVS (yep) Friday afternoon and a drunk man started serenading the check-out lady with a harmonica/blues tribute. But, this didn’t fulfill my bluegrass needs. Good thing Oneonta has its own bluegrass band, Horseshoe Lounge Playboys, which will play its 200th show the day after Thanksgiv- ing at the Autumn Cafe in Oneonta. The group is a polished, yet saucy bunch of musicians who play roots Americana old- timey country and bluegrass. HLP also has a fierce local following, many of whom frequent the Black Oak Tavern. 2 O-Town Scene Nov. 18, 2010 I for one have seen them perform once _ and it was at the Oak. Seeing them at the Autumn will be a classy change of scenery, and the venue will prob- ably be able to handle the fans that are expected to come out. Writer of Upstate Life Magazine (published by The Daily Star, just like the Scene) Karen Miritello happens to be the wife of HLP Randy, and she was available to write our cover story, which allows readers an intimate, time-worn description of the two-year-old band. There’s more good stuff in our pages for those of you who will be around this pre- Thanksgiving week. Enjoy the holiday! _ Cassandra Miller
