October 24, 2013 Page 3 Members have options with advertising interns B oard retreats occur to allow members to dream, look at the future of organizations and simply try to make things better. (You won't find this in any respectable management textbook. You just read commonspeak.) During one of these idea sessions Oct. 10-11 in Brown County, the members of the HSPA and Foundation boards of directors decided to improve opportunities for both students and newspa pers. In that vein the Foundation will add an advertising internship program with a twist. While details remain to be worked out, the program will begin in 2014. The Foundation's role includes recruiting students from the Midwest, setting up the application and selection process, and providing a twoday sales training program for the students before they begin. Now you see the twist. The Foundation's Eugene S. Pulliam Internship pro gram offers a $3,300 stipend to each student-reporter or -photographer going into an HSPA member's newsroom. Advertising interns, how ever, will mean an additional salesperson or designer – and hopefully increased revenue for the host newspaper dur ing the summer. Participating newspapers must agree to pay sales interns minimum wage plus commission (at a rate the paper establishes) for a minimum of eight 40-hour weeks. (Pulliam internships run for 10 weeks.) If the ad department wants a graphic designer, commission does not apply. Advertising directors may set the actual work dates with the student after selec tion. University schedules vary as do students' academic Board Continued from Page 1 A Lexington, Ky., native, he attended the University of Kentucky. He and his wife, Judy, have two daughters and three grandchildren. He is a past president and board member of HSPA's counterpart in Kentucky. "I was honored to have been able to serve the Kentucky Press Association for many years in various capacities, and it taught me the need for representation for newspapers of all sizes," Eldridge said. "I hope I can add value in some small way as I work with other members who already serve the HSPA." Ward first joined KPC, based in Kendallville, as vice president of sales, digital and marketing. Before that he was director of sales and digital Foundation Front By Karen T. Braeckel and/or family commitments. Before the end of 2013, newspapers will receive infor mation about applying for an intern. The Foundation will notify business and journalism schools of the openings avail able and ask students to rank those newspapers where they could work and find housing. (Many serious Pulliam appli cants are willing to relocate anywhere in state, an option for advertising interns as well.) The selection process also will differ from the Pulliam interns. Rather than the edi tors who hosted interns the summer before serving on the selection committee, the ad directors who will hire the students will chose from the applicant pool. Unless only a few students apply, the Foundation will set a day ad directors can review all applications at the HSPA office. The joint boards recom mended this program to help newspapers find qualified applicants. Some publishers and ad directors budget for interns but cannot find the students. The Foundation created a list of advisers at Indiana and other Midwest colleges and universities with jour nalism and communication programs. School newspapers also have advertising sales staff members. HSPA staff will create a new list of business schools to contact for the pro gram. Watch for more informa tion in November when Job Fair and Pulliam Internship material also will come. for GateHouse Media's Community Newspaper Division, where he worked in a leadership capacity with publishers, advertising directors and sales managers, representing 142 publications and related digital portfolios at 72 operating locations in 11 states. Prior to joining GateHouse, Ward was a publisher with Paxton Media Group. He has a background in media management, serving as a circulation manager, advertising director, regional ad director, sales and marketing director, general manager, publisher, group publisher, and divisional director of sales and digital. He and his wife, Quinn, have two young children. Ward said the role HSPA plays in legislative issues and member education – and as a conduit for innovative transformation – is needed now more than ever. Newsroom Seminar Look for the Newsroom Seminar brochure accompa nied by a list of winners from your paper in the coming week. Contest Scrapbooks In an effort to help both advertising and editorial staffs streamline prepara tion of their contest entries, the Foundation introduces contest scrapbooks to mem bers. These free, cloud-based storage folders hold PDF, txt, doc, jpg, gif and png files through the Better Newspaper Contest website. Now instead of scurrying around at the last-minute like a squirrel that forgot to stockpile for winter, contes tant coordinators or individu als can file up to 500mb of attachments in 10 folders throughout the year. When the contest deadline nears, the coordinator can access the files already saved and enter them digitally. (Some categories will still be judged in hardcopy.) SmallTownPapers, design ers of the Better Newspaper Contest digital entry-andjudging website, offers this service to those organizations under contract with them. (Currently 134 media organi zations use this online jour nalism contest.) Those interested in more details may visit www. HSPAfoundation.org and click Contests in the menu bar. Then select Contest Scrapbook Instructions in the drop-down box. Those who did not partici pate this year may find this tool an easy way to organize their best work as the year progresses. If your paper did not enter due to time con straints, please give this a shot. Karen T. Braeckel is director of the HSPA Foundation. Her column runs in the second issue of each month. "As technology has opened the door, there are now more people consuming our news and information than at any other time in history," he said. "They're just reading it in formats that our industry never imagined when the HSPA was founded in 1933." Eldridge said he has a great appreciation for the volunteers who serve their press association, advocating for the honorable labor of newspapering. "The press association serves its members in so many ways, and it gives great value for the small invest ment asked each year," he said. HSPA needs newspapers of all sizes to not only survive but also thrive, Ward said. "We must lead as the media landscape changes to adapt for the future, and I'm excited to be a part of that transformation," he said.
