In business labor culinary launches second website against Cosmopolitan By Ed Komenda staff writer The Culinary Union has cracked open another chapter in its campaign against the Cosmopolitan. First, it was pickets and prolonged protests. Now, it's culinaryconfidential.org, a hotel review blog aimed at the demise of the Cosmopolitan's reputation. While the site's tagline claims it offers an insider perspective on the hospitality industry from the vantage point of the Strip, Culinary officials say it's really the latest shot in the union's war against the $4 billion resort, where some 2,000 workers have been clocking in without a labor contract for more than two years. All of the reviews featured on culinaryconfidential.org range between one and three stars, all on a scale of five. But if you hop on tripadvisor.com and search for the Cosmopolitan, you'll find positive reviews, too. Culinary Confidential also deploys a UNITED FOR A FUTURE WITHOUT BREAST CANCER tab labeled "Complaints." Click through and you'll find a tutorial about how a visitor can file a complaint with the Southern Nevada Health District if he or she experiences "unsafe or unsanitary conditions at a Las Vegas hotel or casino." Culinary Confidential is the second site launched by the union this year. The first was Vegastravelalert.com, which warns visitors about potential labor demonstrations on the Strip. Negotiations with the Cosmopolitan have been stalled between the union — representing about 50,000 bartenders, maids and food servers — and the resort over what's called a successorship clause: a guarantee that a union member's contract would carry over if the resort is sold. Cosmopolitan bosses have also been pressured to sign contracts defined by 40-hour workweeks, health insurance and job security. The standstill led to four major protests outside the resort this year. The Culinary then vowed to maintain a constant presence outside the Cosmopolitan, protesting every weekend — on Friday and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Protests will stop, the Culinary says, when the 2,000 workers inside the resort get contracts. Former Finance Director Al Zochowski ended his tenure with the city Sept. 18 after less than two years on the job. Adair was named acting finance director in late September. Adair is the city's first major hire since Mayor John Lee took office. Lee said he is excited about the experience Adair brings from the private sector, in which he has helped make two start-ups into billion-dollar companies. Adair, who has lived in North Las Vegas for 20 years, previously served on the city's Citizens Utilities Advisory Board. He will oversee a budget of about $434 million and earn an annual salary of $125,000. | 28 October 2013 | 10/23/13 1:04:23 PM
