In business courts Whittemore's law license suspended; case going to disciplinary board By Cy Ryan staff writer CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court has temporally suspended the law license of Reno attorney Harvey Whittemore, convicted of making an estimated $150,000 in illegal political campaign contributions to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. This year, Whittemore was convicted by a federal court jury of felony crimes of making excessive political contributions, making contributions in the name of another and filing a false statement with the Federal Election Commission. He was sentenced to two years in prison starting Jan. 31, 2014, and fined $100,000. Whittemore's attorneys have launched an appeal to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and Reid, D-Nev., has returned the money. The court on Oct. 1 referred the case to the Northern Nevada Disciplinary Board of the State Bar to determine the punishment for Whittemore, a one-time influential lobbyist and land developer. If and when he is freed from prison, Whittemore will be on two years of supervised release, requiring reporting to a probation officer, submitting to a DNA test, working regularly "at lawful occupation" and performing 100 hours of community service. development second phase of Tivoli Village coming By Eli Segall staff writer Developers of Tivoli Village started building the second phase of their retail and office complex near Summerlin this month. IDB Group USA, part of an Israeli conglomerate, is expected to add about 199,000 square feet of retail and 68,000 square feet of offices just north of the first phase, which opened in spring 2011 at Rampart Boulevard and Alta Drive. Construction started Oct. 10 and is expected to wrap up in spring 2015, spokeswoman Sabrina Chapman said. Tivoli was supposed to open in 2009 with 500,000 square feet of retail and 200,000 square feet of offices, but the recession tabled those plans. Developers considered mothballing the $850 million complex but chose to build in phases instead. Velotta senior staff writer Taxi rates will remain at current levels after the Nevada Taxicab Authority agreed to stand pat in the board's annual review of rates and medallion distributions. The board also decided not to issue new medallions — the licensing required to operate a cab. The board last raised mileage rates in 2011, when it added a 20-cent-per-mile fuel surcharge to the rate of $3.30 for the initial cost, then 20 cents per each onethirteenth of a mile, or $2.60 per mile. In July, the board raised the fee for pickups at McCarran International Airport from $1.80 to $2. This year, the number of taxi trips operated in Clark County is down 2.4 percent to 18.1 million, but average revenue per trip is up 1.5 percent to $14.68. | 28 October 2013 20131028_VI09_F.indd 9 | Open the door to banking for professionals.
