Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service Managing Editor’s Note I voted for the first time in Oneonta on Tuesday, and wore the free sticker an- nouncing my active citizenship the rest of the day. As part of The Daily Star’s editorial board, I was privy to presentations by sev- eral of the canidates. Not only was I able to hear first-hand where they stood on issues and watch as Daily Star Editor Sam Pollak provoked them with controversial ques- tions, I got to take in details. Murphy and Arcuri spoke confidently and impressively. Bargabos got nervous speak- ing in front of only the five of us present for his visit. Hannah favored a bright pink tie, while Magee adorned himself with pins and a farm-themed tie. I knew who I was voting for when I filled in my ballot, and felt good about my choices. Another reason I felt more in tune with the elections this year was because of Jon Stewart 2 O-Town Scene Nov. 4, 2010 and Stephen Colbert’s Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, which writer Adrienne Wise and I went down for on a crazy party bus full of students, seniors and baby boomers play- ing accordians and passing around home- made cookies. Adrienne talks about the day _ an enter- taining and thought-provoking experience. I’d like to vote for Jon Stewart’s ideas to make an appearance on The Hill, although I agree with our Casual Chit Chat interviewee, political science professor Laurel Elder, that although Stewart is an excellent comedian, he’s prob- ably not cut out for the presidency. We talk about freedom of speech in this issue, also, with an article on poetry slams _ popular events in Oneonta for theatrical spoken wordsmiths to perform their thoughts to often raucous crowds. The Grand Slam is coming up Wednesday, when 11 SUNY Oneonta poets will compete to make it to the national competition. I hope you enjoy what we’ve put together. Feel free to tell us what you think on Facebook at O-Town Scene or with an e-mail to editor@otownscene.com. _ Cassandra Miller
