There are a lot of unknowns with the shutdown, said Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., including how long it will last. "It's very difficult to figure out where to go from here," he said. The Milwaukee office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also closed during the governmental shutdown, meaning OSHA would respond only "when employees are potentially exposed to hazardous conditions that present a high risk of death or serious physical harm," according to a Sept. 10 memo from David Michaels, assistant secretary of labor for OSHA. A voicemail message at the local office says: "Due to a suspension of federal government services, we are unable to answer your call directly at this time." Johnson The message then directs callers to leave a message, which will be returned when the federal government is up and running. When that will be is anybody's guess. Johnson said that he hopes governmental representatives will reach a point soon where they can agree on some matters. DID YOU KNOW? • In the early 20th century, a world market for only 4 million auto- mobiles was predicted because "the world would run out of chauffeurs." Shortly after the end of World War II, the whole of Volkswagen, factory and patents, was offered free to Henry Ford II. He dismissed the Volkswagen Beetle as a bad design. Today, more than 70 million motorcars are produced every year. The Beetle became one of the best-selling vehicles of all time. – For more facts, visit www.didyouknow.org.
