Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service Managing Editor’s Note There have been few Hal- loweens when I have actually planned a costume, but I am always impressed by those who utilize their creativity and resourcefulness to put to- gether something that makes me want to high-five them. I was proud of my costume my senior year of college. I was fresh back from six months in New Zealand, fol- lowed by a couple of weeks in Australia, where I posed with a cardboard cut-out of Steve Erwin at the Brisbane zoo. I starting planning in late September to be a Crocodile Hunter, and even ordered a blow-up crocodile pool toy to complete the look. In 2005, this was a unique, kitschy idea, and a successful costume. Unfortunately, Er- win died a few months later, and the Facebook pics seems slightly inappropriate. A similar thing happened to my brother three years ago when he came up with the then- genius idea to be pitch-man 2 O-Town Scene Oct. 21, 2010 Billy Mays... Not to worry; when one pseudo- celeb falls, another rises, and this year’s crop of pop culture dar- lings are popular costume choices, with the train- wrecks on “Jersey Shore” inspiring both mass-pro- duced costumes as well as DIY get-ups. In this issue, we have an ar- ticle on popular costumes, as well as one that will lead you to a few stores in Oneonta where you can find cheap items to throw together for a creative costume. We also talk to Local Na- tives, an up-and-coming group whose debut album, “Gorilla Manor,” is already making top-10 of 2010 album lists of major music publications and websites. And this group is coming to Oneonta to perform Monday for $7 ($5 for students).What?! This is a show to see for anyone who might want to tell a “I saw them when” story. They’re play- ing with Albany indie-rock band Around the World and Back, who we also talk to in this issue. Popular SUNY Oneonta band Really Old Airplanes will be adding its local flavor to the show, as well. It’s a deal, and we’ve been more than excited about it in the newsroom (by “we,” I mean me and reporter Mark Boshnack, the guy who gave me their CD in March and who wrote the cover story on Local Natives).
