Palmer in Davenport, Iowa. At that time he helped restore the hearing of a man who had lost his hearing while standing up under a staircase and banging into it. Mr. Palmer decided to investigate his treatment success, resulting in the birth of modern chiropractic. In 1897 he opened what is now known as Palmer College of Chiropractic. A Chiropractor today can see a diverse range of case types. While best known for low back pain, Chiropractors also see patients' with neck pain, headaches, chest pain, leg pain, shoulder injuries, and numbness in different parts of the body (including legs or carpal tunnel syndrome) to name a few. A Chiropractor helps a patient by giving a treatment that allows the body's own nervous system (the control system) to communicate better, allowing your body to heal itself. This treatment is done by adjusting the spinal bones, or, joints of the injured area. There is no average Chiropractic patient. Patients range in age from several hours old to well into their 90's. A Chiropractor can modify or change their treatment method to suit the needs or condition of the patient. One thing that all patients' do have in common is that they wish to receive healthcare without the use of drugs or surgery, if possible. In addition, Chiropractors try to help their patients remain healthy (just as a dentist tries to regularly clean your teeth instead of only treating cavities) by suggesting regular visits. The old stereotype of a Chiropractic office visit is giving way to the new reality. Chiropractic care is safe and proven effective for many things. The governments of the USA, Canada, Britain, and New Zealand have all done studies on Chiropractic and found it beneficial and even better than other types of healthcare for certain problems. Today's Chiropractor receives the same education as an MD for general science and anatomy but spends the last 2 years of the program learning how to treat with Chiropractic instead of medical choices. Chiropractors are licensed by the state of Wisconsin, have passed rigorous National licensing exams and must continually update their education.
