Opportunities exist through Alliance for the Great Lakes MILWAUKEE – An annual beach cleanup is making a splash in Milwaukee. Since 2002, the Alliance for the Great Lakes' Adopt-a-Beach event relies on participants throughout the United States to invest their time cleaning up community beaches. This year's official cleanup date was Sept. 21, but for Milwaukee residents hoping to participate, there are still plenty of opportunities. "This is an event that takes place all around the world," said Todd Brennan, the Wisconsin outreach coordinator for Alliance for the Great Lakes. "It is the largest single day cleanup like this. It takes place in over 100 countries, has over 600,000 participants and resulted in 17,000 pounds of garbage cleaned up last year." "The overall premise," he added, "is to be a service project to clean beaches. It also gives participants who help a healthy reminder that pollution is still very much a problem." Beach cleanups will take place Saturday, Monday and Wednesday at Bradford Beach, Grant Park's beach and Watercraft Beach. For more information on the events, or to register to participate, visit www.greatlakesadopt.org. Participants receive gloves and a bag for garbage, which are supplied by the Alliance for the Great Lakes, a group dedicated to protecting and restoring the Great Lakes and their shorelines. But the difference with this event is that cleanup results are recorded, Brennan said. "We're using the information from the cleanups to educate people about our beaches' health," he said. "The data is helping us to monitor beach health and track what's happening with them." Team leaders, who are responsible for running the cleanups, collect data from participants at the end of the day, which includes how much litter was cleaned up and the levels of bacteria in the water. The results from the day are then recorded into the Adopt-a-Beach system. The Alliance for Great Lakes then compiles a report. Brennan said it's not too late to sign up, and team leaders are always looking for more volunteers to join the cleanup efforts. "Overall, we've seen an increase in participation over the last couple of years," Brennan said. "It's always a little up and down, and last year it surged up. This year, it seems to be down a little bit, especially in Wisconsin." That's why the Alliance for the Great Lakes would like to see more Wisconsin communities signing up for the event, Brennan said. The more the merrier, Brennan said. And, it gives residents an opportunity to contribute to data that makes a difference. "We're using this data to make informed decisions, see where problem areas are, and that directly correlates to decisions people are making about our water and beaches," he said. "There are initiatives and funding being cut everywhere that used to track this stuff. That's why our event is so important." Celebrating Our 8th Year Potter's Farmers Market Piggly Wiggly 2201 E.
