On Eli Segall's Sept. 11 vegasinc.com story about Nevada's rising foreclosure rate ("Nevada's foreclosure rate back to highest in U.S., report says"): We have the most financially irresponsible people in the country here. We have the lowest savings rate in the country, the lowest average credit score and we're second from the bottom in terms of business failures. These things lead to elevated foreclosure rates. — Gerry Hagemen (zip1pert) On Ed Komenda's Sept. 13 vegasinc.com story about the Culinary Union threatening to strike ("Culinary Union warns of possible citywide strike"): Let them walk out. I am sure there are plenty of unemployed people out there willing to work. Unions do nothing but protect a lazy worker's job. — Nevadaforlife 22 STEVE MARCUS The number of flights Allegiant Air canceled Sept. 20 to inspect emergency slides on 30 of its airplanes. Most of the planes were ready to fly the next day. $347 million The amount Crescent Real Estate Holdings, a Wall Street investment firm, paid for the Hughes Center office park Sept. 20. | 30 SEPTEMBER 2013 20130930_VI19_F.indd 19 | Unions created the middle class in this country. If you have Saturday off, thank a labor union. If you have a living wage, thank a labor union. If you have ever received overtime pay, sick leave or a paid vacation, thank a labor union. People died in this struggle against employers so that working people can live a decent life. — Daniel M. Barber (Gramsci) Keep asking for more money and eventually the job will cost too much for the operation to be profitable. If wages surpass their fair market value, then the only step for the owner to take is to get rid of the job completely. — yolevyolev I've worked in Las Vegas for 13 years without a contract. I've never felt compelled to picket my employer. As a matter of fact, I'm grateful they risked significant capital, brutal government regulation and taxes to hire me, train me and allow me to excel. — xman2000 On Conor Shine's Sept. 12 lasvegassun.com story about a new marketing campaign from the Southern Nevada Water Authority ("Ain't that a kick in the groin? SNWA again airing controversial television ads"): I wonder how this ad would go over if it were an elderly man and he punched a young woman who was watering her lawn. While I am sure the humor was intended to carry a message, it certainly implies that men are stupid, and when they are stupid, they deserve to be kicked in the testicles. — Eddie Gaul I agree with conserving water, but then why are we building houses at a rapid pace? I removed grass and all the things we were asked to do, but now I wonder why. There are all kinds of homes being built up the street, and I can't even plant a lousy shrub. This really is a situation that many people don't understand. Don't rely on the new lake tap or so-called straw to solve water issues that may never get done or done in time. — Wally J (Acommentator) 19 9/26/13 2:20:14 PM
