Consignment challenge
"Stagers and interior designers love
the whole concept of home consignment," Crowell says. "They're very good
at putting things together and do an
amazing job creating spaces using consigned furniture."
We figured that, too, so we asked
Vanessa Murphy, a former couture stylist who worked with fashion icons such
as Diana Vreeland, Bill Blass and Calvin
Klein and is now principal of Vanessa
Murphy Interiors in Tiburon, to put consignment shopping in Marin to the test.

She toured four Marin stores. The
Home Consignment Center, Peterson's
Consign & Design, Design Plus Gallery
and Avant Garde with the intent to create one virtual room. Instead, she was so
inspired by what she found that she created two rooms.
Her narrative for both: a refined
woman with good sensibilities, who was
probably a traveler and liked Asian piec-

es and preferred uncommon spaces.

"My strategy was to go in and look
for inspiration," she says and the first
piece she found was a glamorous white
tufted head and footboard at the Home
Consignment Center. "I know how expensive that piece is and I know that
not everyone would have the courage or
the money to take it home but I built the
bedroom on that piece."
