On the surface, The Shire feels like your typical Irish pub — complete with vintage beer signs, wood interior, Guinness on tap and locals perched at the bar. Upon chatting with head chef Jim Carey and manager Ra- chel Bracchy, I came to learn why The Shire is more than it seems. Ed and Sally O’Neill, owners of the Andes Hotel, opened The Shire this past July and have already garnered a steady crowd composed mostly of locals and college students. In addition to a full menu includ- ing several soups, lunch menu and pub fare, it boasts an eclectic bottled and canned beer selection with rotating taps. A Sunday brunch, which includes pan- Rockin’ beer selection, late Sunday cakes and eggs Benedict, lasts until 4 p.m. Jim and Rachel were especially enthusias- tic about having the Football Sunday Ticket on Direct TV, live music, Thursday night ka- raoke and Mason Jar Mondays (who doesn’t love drinking out of a mason jar?). Some people may be familiar with Jim’s culinary efforts from his days at the Autumn Café in Oneonta and the Quarter Moon Cafe in Delhi. of creating a diverse menu that succeeds. My husband, Joe, chose one of the weekly dinner specials, the Sauteed Jumbo Shrimp with wild rice and broccoli rabe, noting that the shrimp and rice were perfectly cooked. I enjoyed their recommended Thai Spiced Veggie Burger with a side of fries.
