Swing:30 If you're ears desire some classic jazz tunes, don't miss this group! Friday night, September 20th at 6:30pm you will hear some of Shelby's finest musicians at the Cleveland County Arts Council building during the 2013 Art of Sound Festival. Combining the immeasurable experience of Shelby's beloved guitarist, Ray Ledford, with the mighty, soulful voice of Betty Z, J. Justin Harper Swing:30's sound is nothing less than monumental. Betty Z volunteered at the local Hospice singing and talking with patients, when Marketing and PR Director, Pam Issacs suggested that Swing:30 accompany her for a few songs. Last September, the Hospice fundraiser and rib sale at the Shelby City Park was the first time Ray and Betty met, Swing:30 it was "instant musical appreciation both ways." Bass player, Charles Raines, recognized Betty Z's distinct voice from her performance of the National Anthem at the American Legion World Series. With the steadfast rhythm guitar of Tommy Forney and the beat of swinging percussionist Gary Jones, an all-star line up was born. Since then, the group has played many private functions as well as opening up for Leon Redbone at the Don Gibson Theatre, and an assortment other of events and fundraisers including one of uptown Shelby's favorite restaurants, Ni Fen. Swing:30 sports a repertoire of standards from the 20's and 30's and beyond, including "Summertime," "All of Me," "Unforgettable," and Don Gibson's "I Can't Stop Loving You." The band adopted its name from the compositions of swing guitarist, Django Reinhardt, "Swing 39," and "Swing 48." Forney states, "We all love Ray's amazing musicianship and knowledge of what is right and what sounds good, and Betty provides the personality and the vocal strength."
