The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Veterans Park, 1010 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, and will officially kick off at noon Saturday with the Fast Track grand launch of 600 kites. "This is one of the coolest festivals in the city because it's so different," said Scott Fisher, owner of the Gift of Wings kite shop in Franklin. "We bring in professional kite flying teams, choreographed kite flying and provide kite flying lessons." Groups performing include the Chicago Fire Kite Team and Team 02, both of which are precision kite flying teams and will perform choreographed kite flying three times each day during the event. Submitted photo The 35th annual Frank Mots International Kite Festival will be held at Veterans Park on Milwaukee's lakefront on Saturday and Sunday. The event is free and open to the public. This year will feature an all new octopus kite and two giant manta rays, Fisher said. "The octopus kite is 140 feet long and 50 feet wide," he said. "And to hold it down, they use 4,000-pound line. These are big kites." This is the annual festival's 35th year, and Fisher said the name of the fest comes from an interesting place. It's named after Frank Mots, he said, who was a pipe maker. "He retired from his job in the late '60s or early '70s, and would make kites for kids for free by Bradford Beach," Fisher said. "The Kite Society of Wisconsin & Illinois formed after he died. A year after he died, they held the first Frank Mots festival." There also will be free kites given away to the first 100 kids who participate in the Kaplan University Kids Mad Dash. Kites and food will be available for purchase throughout the festival. Although, Fisher said some might be able to snag free food as its dropped from balloons. "They will be dropping Johnsonville brats by parachutes this year," he said. Kite lessons also will be provided during the free event. Fisher said he recommends spectators be there for the release of the 600 balloons. He predicts there will be more than 10,000 attendees this year. "Six hundred balloons will all be released at noon to the Mary Poppins' song 'Let's go Fly a Kite,'" he said. "It will be a great grand launching."
