Is it true that my feet can be affecting my low back and cause pain? A: Yes this can be true. Most chronic low back pain is the result some form of structural weakness or repetition causing failure. Your feet are the foundation of your body. While 99% of all feet are normal at birth, 8% can have trouble in the first year of life, 41% at age 5 and 80% by age 20. Many foot conditions eventually contribute to health concerns farther up the kinetic chain eventually affecting the low back or higher up, the spine. Think of your house as an example. If the foundation is built incorrectly, it will cause cracks in the walls of the house. Given the right conditions the house is susceptible to rain, wind or other storms. In your spine, a foundation that has problems can cause changes in the spine above it, resulting in pain weakness or other symptoms. Here are a few examples of conditions where feet can affect the lumbar spine. Metatarsalgia is foot pain in the long bones of the arch of the foot. This can lead to altering how you walk to avoid the pain, which can alter the stress transferred to the pelvis. This accommodation can cause low back pain, far removed from the foot. Arch collapse or pronated feet causes internal rotation to the leg, hip, and rotation of the lumbar spine. This causes increased wear and tear on the lumbar spine and is often seen in patients who "didn't do anything" to cause their low back pain. Eventually the stress is too much and their back "gives" out. Planter Fascitis occurs when the bones of the feet stop moving correctly and cause altered pressure in the foot joints. This leads to spasm of the plantar muscle on the bottom of the foot and eventually a heel spur. Chiropractic care helps these conditions and does it with out the need for drugs. You should never have an injection in your foot to mask the pain without first seeking Chiropractic care to fix the foot. Proper evaluation of the feet and associated spine can help restore proper mechanics and ensure stress is carried properly on the body. To ignore or avoid the symptoms only makes the problem worse or even unfixable later. It is essential that the whole body be looked at for care, not just the area of pain. A proper chiropractic evaluation ensures that the patients' needs are met. If you treat the pain instead of looking at the whole person, relief is temporary. A Chiropractor with a Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner Diploma has the advanced training to help patients with many types of foot problems. a tent on the Riveredge lawn and slumber to the sound of the night choir.
