Lafayette Street • Shelby, NC • 704-482-7880 Cleveland County Welcomes American Legion World Series Cleveland County Abuse Prevention Council Building Hope Thomas Pandolfi Young American Pianist "an artist who is master of both the grand gesture and the sensual line" The Washington Post Saturday, August 24 7:00 PM GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY Dover Theatre More than 600 volunteers will be in American Legion World Series (ALWS) uniforms for the five-day tournament that begins with the first pitch at 9:30am tomorrow, Friday, Aug.16. Four games will be played on Friday and Saturday, three on Sunday, two on Monday and possibly two on Tuesday. The Series host eight regional champions from all over the country and has the potential to provide fifteen games of some of the best youth baseball played in the United States. Anyone with questions should look for people wearing lanyard-held name tags that read "Volunteer" or "Usher," or visit Operations Headquarters near the new front entrance of Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium. The stadium received a $2.5 million facelift this year, thanks to a $1 million anonymous gift that was met and exceeded by contributions from the general public. Included in the upgrades is high-speed Internet service that rivals that of many major league ballparks and large convention centers. In addition to first-rate baseball, the ALWS consistently honors the military men and women of America, both veterans and those currently serving. Sunday, Aug. 18, the third day of the tournament, is Military Appreciation Day. Veterans and active military personnel will be admitted free and will receive a distinctive cap and coin. Two Medal of Honor recipients – COL Joe Marm and SGM Bob Patterson – will be recognized; the late SFC Allen Young will be honored in a brief ceremony with his wife and children. A new military statue of a soldier carrying an infant was dedicated prior to the games. Entitled "Shelter and Hope," the statue on the third base concourse was created by North Carolina sculptor Suzie Hallier Huskins and presented by the American Legion Department of N.C. From the Lowe's Plaza of Champions to the new ticket office, souvenir stand and the new parking lots, Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium is the place to be Aug. 16-20!
