Join the Gaston County Beekeepers for their Annual 10-week Bee School and learn every- thing you need to know to get started in beekeep- ing. The course covers beekeeping history, bee anatomy, and behavior, setting up and manag- ing your hive, keeping your bees healthy, nec- tar sources and blooming times, and honey produc- tion and marketing. In addition to class- room lectures, students will participate in two field days in April, where they will have the opportunity to work with live bees and apply what they've learned to demonstrate the proper way to open a hive, use a smoker, in- spect a hive for the differ- ent types of bees, brood and honey, and pollen storage. There will also be additional optional workshops to teach spe- cific activities (e.g., as- sembly of hive parts, honey harvesting). Tuition is $95.00, in- cluding the class textbook and a one-year member- ship in the Gaston County Beekeepers Association and the NC State Bee- keepers Association. In addition to the course, students will have the chance to take part in our wooden-ware assembly workshop and two field days where they can work with live bee colonies. Students will also be able to buy bees and wooden ware at a discounted rate and participate in our honey harvesting/extract- ing workshop in early July. If you prefer a paper registration, please note that it must be mailed by January 12, in order to receive your information on time.
