One story was concerning a fl ea infestation in the barracks in which she and her sister, Betsie, were kept. Corrie abhorred the fl eas. The ladies were always curious to why they had so much liberty in their barracks. They were able to carry on Bible studies and read scripture out loud, without any German interference. Later, Corrie learned that the guards never wanted to go into that particular barracks, for fear of the fl eas. The fl eas actually turned into a hidden blessing. We all desire a trouble free and comfortable life, but when hardships come, we tend to complain and question God's care. In Corrie's case it was a plague of fl eas, but it could be anything that disturbs us and changes the dynamics of life. We must understand that behind each adversity is a sovereign God who is allowing it to happen. In the big scheme of life, it is something that He has placed there for our ultimate good. The Apostle Paul had a similar situation with what he called a "thorn in the fl esh." The infi rmity was used by God to bring him to a place of greater dependence and humility. By the grace of God, he was able to thank God for the thorn just as Corrie was thankful for the fl eas. Perhaps there is a troublesome situation in our life in which we question its purpose. We'll not experience God's grace until we acknowledge that he knows what's best and surrender to His plan. We might even grow to the point of being thankful for the fl eas.
