Entertainment Now | October 7 - 13, 2023 Sunday morning | 7 By Michelle Rose TV Media No 'Wonder': Tough news if you're a fan of ABC's reboot of "The Wonder Years": the series has been cancelled after two seasons. Inspired by the '80s coming-of- age series, the Lee Daniels ("Empire")-produced "Wonder Years" followed a Black middle- class family living in Montgomery, Alabama, during the late 1960s. Its stories are told from the point of view of 12-year-old Dean Wil- liams (Elisha "EJ" Williams, "Flip to a Million"), and Don Cheadle ("House of Lies"), who voices an older version of Dean, serving as the narrator. Sadly, the series seemingly struggled to establish itself and find a sizable following from the start. Ratings-wise, it ranked last among ABC programs during the 2022-23 season, which is never a good thing for a new series in its freshman year. Another hint of trouble: for its second season, "The Wonder Years" was originally in- tended to have a mid-season pre- miere but was pushed to the sum- mer and ended up as the least- watched scripted series on ABC. "The Wonder Years" isn't the only ABC scripted series to have its run cut short. Other recently can- celled series include "Big Sky," "Alaska Daily" and "The Company You Keep." 'One Piece', two seasons: Amid news of several series can- cellations — including HBO's "Winning Time: The Rise of The Lakers Dynasty," whose recently aired Season 2 finale is now a se- ries finale — fans of "One Piece" have reason to rejoice since the series has been renewed for a second season. Based on the manga and an- ime series of the same name, the live-action "One Piece" stars Iñaki Godoy ("The Imperfects," 2022) as Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate seeking to become King of the Pi- rates by searching the Blue Sea for a mythical treasure. The cast also includes Mackenyu ("Knights of the Zodiac," 2023), Emily Rudd ("Hunters"), Jacob Romero ("The Resident") and Taz Skylar ("Boil- ing Point," 2021). The series debuted in August on Netflix, and it appears to have instantly connected with viewers and critics alike. Two weeks after its premiere, it was holding steady at the top of Netflix's Top 10 chart — a very good sign for a freshman series. Producers have also confirmed that scripts for a now-confirmed Season 2 were already completed.
