Entertainment Now | October 7 - 13, 2023 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: For the shows that iso- late people — like "Survi- vor" and "Big Brother" — do the contestants ever get im- portant information from the world? I'm thinking about presidential elections, COVID developments or other world news. A: The general rule is no — con- testants on "Survivor," "Big Broth- er" and other isolation-based shows are totally cut off from the outside world. And your COVID-19 example is a good illustration of how far that can go. In late winter 2020, every- one around the world was talking about the spread of the pandemic — everyone, that is, except the contestants of a couple of different "Big Brother" series that were filming at the time. People on the German iteration, for example, were only told about the pandemic later. This was big news in Germany: the broadcaster announced specifically that it would not tell the contestants, who had been sequestered in the house since February. Public back- lash ensued, and the network re- lented and made a special live epi- sode where the still-sequestered contestants were given the news. Contestants on the Canadian version, also filming at the time, said they noticed the sudden ab- sence of a live crowd outside the house — usually there to greet the people when they are evicted. There was a large crowd roar for the March 9 eviction, but silence for the next one on March 14. They didn't learn why — that crowds were no longer permitted outside the house — until later. In some ways, these contestants were in a better position than most — thanks to the design of the show they were already essentially quarantined, at a time when the rest of us were trying to figure out how to do that for ourselves. COVID's not the only example, though. Years earlier, "Big Broth- er's" producers were reluctant to tell the remaining Season 2 contes- tants that the Sept. 11 terror at- tacks had happened. They only gave in because one of the contes- tants, Monica Bailey, had a cousin who was missing. But even then, the contestants were only told that it had hap- pened — they still weren't al- lowed to watch news coverage or seek out more info. Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com.
