E-4 Haynes medals for his service in the Army. "Michael selfl essly put his life on the line to defend America's Freedom, and it is my privilege to present Michael with several honors," Congressman Edwards said during a brief ceremony in the County Commissioners meeting room on Thursday, Aug. 31. Haynes received the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Sharpshooter Badge with Rifl e Bar and the Korea Defense Service Medal. Spec. 4 Haynes, who served in the Army from 1971-1974, was deployed to South Korea in 1972 where he was stationed at Camp Casey, a U.S. military base just 10 miles south of the Korean Demilitarized Zone. During his deployment to South Korean President Park Chung Hess proclaimed martial law throughout the country, dissolving the National Assembly and suspending all political activities. "During this contentious time, Michael showed leadership and bravery and was even named the 2nd Infantry Division's Soldier of the month in October 1972," Congressman Edwards said. "Michael selfl essly put his life on the line to defend American's freedom," Edwards said. Haynes was joined at the ceremony by his wife, Mary Ellen Carew Haynes. The couple met at a United Service Organization dance in New Jersey where she was a volunteer. The couple were married in 1973. The couple have two children and one granddaughter. " C o n g r a t u l a t i o n s , Michael, on this well- deserved recognition. A grateful nation thanks you for all your service," Edwards concluded.
