And I've seen that movie a hun- dred times, at least. A: You must have heard it from someone who watched the delet- ed scenes. Parker Posey ("Beau is Afraid," 2023) was cast in the film, and di- rector-writer Nora Ephron ("When Harry Met Sally," 1989) "fell madly in love with her," according to pro- ducer Gary Foster. But he told En- tertainment Weekly in 2018 that her scene had to be cut for time. That scene can now be found online, and on some (though not all) DVD and Blu-Ray releases. But at the time, it seemed like Posey's performance would simply disap- pear forever. Ephron was so torn up about it she wrote a personal letter to Posey apologizing for the decision. "Nora was so supportive," Posey said in an old (pre-actors' strike) interview with Vogue maga- zine. "She told me I was a 'gifted comedienne,' which I'd never been called before." Soon after that, Ephron took her support a step further: She wrote a whole, sizable role specifically for Posey in "You've Got Mail," a sort of spiritual sequel to "Seattle" — in that it also featured Meg Ryan ("When Harry Met Sally," 1989) and Tom Hanks ("Cast Away," 2000) as the central couple. Posey was given the role of Hanks' girlfriend at the beginning of the movie — the one we all want him to ditch so he can get to- gether with Ryan instead. Posey's gift for making hard-to-like charac- ters likeable was put to good use. It was, by far, the biggest movie of Posey's career to that point — a career that had been mostly devot- ed to small indie pictures. But post-"Mail," she became an in-demand star, known equally for punching up the ensembles of big, somewhat schlocky movies such as "Scream 3" (2000) and "Blade: Trinity" (2004), and for toplining respectable indies like "Broken English" (2007).
