"Don't worry, honey," I told her, "I'll take care of your stuff and mine." Little did I know what I was in for. You see, she runs the horse farm we live on which means that she's constantly caring for the horses. And she cooks most all of our meals. And she takes care of our daughter's needs like helping fi x hair and choosing which outfi ts to wear. Then there's the grocery shopping, the housecleaning, and…well, you get the picture. So here I was trying to take care of my stuff and her stuff. I knew I was in over my head after the fi rst day. Well, she got better quickly and thank God was able to do most of her stuff. And me? I got better, too, and with a much greater appreciation for what she does to make my life so wonderful. Do you appreciate what the people around you do? Discover what they do and then thank them for doing it—today—as you make a positive life. Do you appreciate the people around you? By Loretta Cozart On Thursday, June 29, the United States Su- preme Court ruled that colleges cannot use race in admissions. In the 6-3 decision, conservative justices stuck down ad- mission policies based on race at both UNC-Chapel Hill and Harvard Univer- sity. Chief Justice Roberts said that the court has "permitted race-based admissions only within the confines of narrow re- strictions. University pro- grams must comply with strict scrutiny, they may never use race as a ste- reotype or negative, and, at some point, they must end." The two schools' programs, "however well-intentioned and im- plemented in good faith, fail each of these criteria." Roberts stated the schools "concluded, wrongly, that the touch- stone of an individual's identity is not challenges bested, skills built, or les- sons learned but the color of their skin. Our constitu- tional history does not tol- erate that choice." The court's three Liberal Justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and Ketanji Brown Jack- son dissented. Governor Roy Coo- per issued the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the case saying, "This decision undermines de- cades of progress made across the country to re- duce systemic discrimina- tion and promote diversity on campuses which is an important part of a quality education. Campus lead- ers will now have to work even harder to ensure that North Carolinians of all backgrounds are rep- resented in higher educa- tion and to ensure strong, diverse student bodies at our colleges and uni- versities to train the next generation of leaders for North Carolina and the nation." UNC Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz said in a statement Thursday, "Carolina is committed to bringing together talented students with different perspectives and life ex- periences and to making an affordable, high-qual- ity education accessible to the people of North Carolina and beyond."
