We are not immune to the aging process. But those of us who exercise on a regular basis have some advan- tages as regular exercise is one of the most powerful things we can do to pro- mote healthy living. If you want to stay fit and healthy as you age, you must engage in some sort of a regular workout re- gime. Even if you've nev- er exercised a day in your life, you can still benefit from adding exercise to your daily routine. Now is a good time to start. We want to share some tips on the best ways to exercise for aging healthily. Recognize the benefits of exercising as you age. The reasons exercise and aging should go hand in hand are plenty. In general, people who are physically active age more slowly than those who are sedentary. Exer- cise helps prevent anxiety and depression, improves bone density and it lowers risk for chronic diseases, including cancer, diabe- tes, heart disease, plus it does wonders for weight control. Test your strength. The best exercise in- cludes strength training. As you age, you lose muscle. In fact, start- ing at age 30, you lose between 3 and 5 percent of your muscle mass in each decade that follows. The good news is, you can preserve some of it by keeping your muscles challenged and strong. Regular strength training helps tone and strengthen your muscles, joints and ligaments, which keeps you more physically fit and independent. Main- taining muscle strength also improves balance and reduces the risk of falls— one of the leading causes of injuries for seniors. Mix up your exercise routine. The best exercise is a workout that targets muscle strength, cardio- vascular health, balance, and flexibility. So, for the sake of aging healthily, try to engage in a mix of our Curves low impact, high intensity circuit strength training 3-4 times a week along with your favorite activity such as tennis, golf, pickleball or hiking. By varying your exercise, you'll keep your body younger. Keep it social. One of the best ways to stay sharp, healthy, and engaged is by nurturing your social network and being with other like minded individuals. To strengthen your social network and your muscles at the same time, choose an exercise you can do alongside supportive people who know exactly what you are going through. Not only will your workout friends mo- tivate you, they will keep you accountable for your workout routine. Curves Aptos offers exact- ly that. Whether you know someone on our circuit or not, it's easy to make friends which helps you stay accountable and live your best life. Go for your goals.
