Brainerd Dispatch • May 28 - June 3, 2023 •19 "The Gryphon" Prime Video Germany's six-episode, big-budget fan- tasy epic, "The Gryphon," based on book series by Wolfgang Hohlbein, makes its international debut on the Amazon streamer Friday, May 26. The story fol- lows misfits Mark (Jeremias Meyer, "Vampire Sisters," 2012), Memo (Zoran Pingel, "The Island") and Becky (Lea Drinda, "We Children from Bahnhof Zoo"), as they stumble upon a fantastical world called The Black Tower. It is here where a world-devouring monster called the Gryphon, who ruthlessly subjugates all living creatures he comes across, resides. Mark is reluctant be drawn into a monster fight, despite being the only one who can take down the Gryphon. But when his brother Thomas (Theo Trebs, "The White Ribbon," 2009) goes missing, Mark and his friends face their destiny and set out to confront the dangers of The Black Tower. Brought to the screen by creators Sebastian Marka and Erol Yesilkaya (both of "Tatort"), "The Gryphon" is directed by Marka and Max Zahle ("Schrotten!," 2016) and executive produced by Quirin Berg ("Pagan Peak"), Max Wiedemann ("Who Am I," 2014) and André Zoch ("How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)"). Sabine Timoteo ("The Chronicles of Melanie," 2016), Flora Li Thiemann ("The Aftermath," 2019), Yuri Volsch ("Das Boot"), Samirah Breuer ("Almania"), Thorsten Merten ("Baby- lon Berlin") and Sebi Jaeger ("Fly," 2021) also star. "True Grit" (2010) Giddy up, cowboys: The acclaimed 2010 western film, "True Grit," is now available to stream on Prime Video. Written, directed, edited and produced by Academy award-winning brothers Ethan and Joel Coen (both of "Fargo," 1996), the project is an adaptation of Charles Portis' 1968 novel of the same name. Viewers are trans- ported back to Arkansas in the 1870s, where they meet protagonist Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld, "Hawkeye"), a 14-year-old girl forced to work with a boozy, trigger- happy U.S. Marshal named Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges, "The Big Lebowski," 1998), whom she hires to pursue Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin, "No Country for Old Men," 2007), the outlaw responsible for her father's death. Together, alongside Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon, "The Martian," 2015), the misfits embark on a dangerous adventure that puts their grit and determi- nation to the test. "Wanda Sykes: I'm An Entertainer" (2023) Comedian and actor Wanda Sykes ("The Upshaws") takes her comic chops to the stage once more with her new stand-up special, "Wanda Sykes: I'm An Enter- tainer," which premieres on Netflix Tuesday, May 23. Her second hour-long Netflix comedy special (behind 2019's "Not Normal") catches up with Sykes, who is renowned for her political commentary, as she touches on everything from the challenges of raising Gen Z teens to the dilemmas of being a liberal in a hyper- charged political climate, delivered with her trademark "insightful and ferocious wit and candor audiences have come to know and love" (per Netflix). Filmed at Philadelphia's Miller Theater, "I'm An Entertainer" is directed by Linda Mendoza ("Scrubs") and executive produced by Sykes and Page Hurwitz ("Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready"), from their Push It Productions company. "Victim/Suspect" (2023) Journalist Rae de Leon ("PBS Newshour") embarks on her first solo investigation as she unravels the story behind Netflix's new crime documentary, "Victim/ Suspect," premiering Tuesday, May 23. While working as a reporter at the Center for Investigative Report- ing, de Leon uncovered a disturbing and shocking pattern: young women who report to the police that they've been sexually assaulted are finding themselves charged with making a false report, arrested and even imprisoned, instead of finding justice from the system they had hoped would protect them. Travelling across the nation, de Leon digs deeper into these harrowing cases, using video footage, first-hand accounts from victims and interviews with legal experts to uncover where these devastating flaws in the legal system lie, and how they can be fixed. Also featuring journalist and filmmaker Amanda Pike ("The Grab," 2022), who serves as a series producer with de Leon, director Nancy Schwartzman ("Red Red Roll," 2018), Chris- topher Clements ("In the Same Breath," 2021), Julie Goldman ("A Thousand Cuts," 2020) and Alice Henty ("Welcome to Chechnya," 2020), "Victim/Suspect" is executive produced by Carolyn Hepburn ("Love to Love You, Donna Summer," 2023).
