Donation Stations are a way for the community to engage in supporting local food and food security efforts. The rate of food insecurity in Rutherford County is 24.4%, higher than both state and national rates. Almost 1/4 of county residents don't have consistent, dependable access to enough food for active, healthy living. Donation Stations use a simple farmers market-based approach to procure donations for local hunger relief organizations while supporting local farms. Donation Station dates are June 10, June 24, July 15, Aug. 12, Aug. 26. On these days, market shoppers can purchase fresh produce from vendors and donate it at a volunteer-run Donation Station table. Shoppers can also offer a monetary donation, which will then be used to purchase fresh produce from farmers at the market at full value. At the end of the market day, all donated produce will be given to a local food pantry. Rutherford County is proud to be a Donation Station county thanks to community partners and extraordinary volunteers who make it a success. "Last year, Donation Station volunteers contributed 44 hours and donated 276 pounds of fresh food to three local food pantries in just 4 market days," said Tracy Davis, Extension Agent, Rutherford County Cooperative Extension. Food pantries, volunteers, and others interested may contact Tracy Davis at 828-287-6010 or tracy_davis@ncsu.edu Food Donation Station opens Saturday
