May 28 - June 3, 2023 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 9 The National Memorial Day Concert is in its 34th year, and Joe Mantegna has been a big part of its history. The "Criminal Minds" and "Criminal Minds: Evolution" star is in his own 22nd year of participating in the event, having started as a guest and progressed to co-host, usually sharing that role with close friend Gary Sinise. They'll reunite for this year's edition of the concert Sunday, May 28, on PBS (check local listings), to be televised again from the west Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. "The first 12 years, Ossie Davis and Charlie Durning took care of that side," says "Glengarry Glen Ross" Tony Award winner Mantegna says of co-hosting the special, "and I'm glad to follow in their footsteps. It was nice to be back in D.C. last year (after two years of pandemic-prompted virtual stagings from a studio). They did restrict the attendance, since it was still a little too soon to allow 200,000 people to just show up. The (on-site) audience was pretty much invita- tion-only, which was fine. From what I gather, it will be loosened up more this time." This year's scheduled performers — either rendering songs or participating in segments highlighting stories of service members and their families — include "The West Wing" alums Dule Hill and Mary McCormack, S. Epatha Merkerson ("Chicago Med"), John Slattery ("Mad Men"), Broadway veteran Megan Hilty, country-music star Jo Dee Messina and gospel artist Yolanda Adams. Jack Everly will conduct the National Symphony Orchestra. "I've been lucky enough to have part of the responsibility to reach out to the acting talent," Mantegna reports, "and more often than not, once they've participated, they'll say to me, 'Hey, if you ever need me again, I'm there.' They have the same kind of revelation I had the first time I did it. You'd have to be pretty stone-hearted to participate in this and walk away without saying, 'Wow, that's some- thing that changed my life a little bit. And I would be honored to do it again.'" In addition to a tribute to a Vietnam War POW released 50 years ago, and a commemora- tion of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, this year's concert will devote con- siderable time to Gold Star Families … relatives of military personnel who maintain the legacies of loved ones who died in service to the Unit- ed States. They often factor into the National Memorial Day Concert, and Mantegna believes their stories can't be told enough. "I think they got a lot of response from a segment that Jean Smart and I did last year," he notes, "about a family that lost both of their sons. It gives us an opportunity to help continue the healing for these families that are out there." spotlight BY JAY BOBBIN The National Memorial Day Concert airs on PBS Joe Mantegna returns to the National Memorial Day Concert Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy in "Succession" Signature HealthCARE of Terre Haute 3500 Maple Avenue Terre Haute, IN 47804 (812) 238-1555 SHCof TerreHaute.com reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Signature HealthCARE of Terre Haute 3500 Maple Avenue Terre Haute, IN 47804 (812) 238-1555 SHCof TerreHaute.com reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Signature HealthCARE of Terre Haute 3500 Maple Avenue Terre Haute, IN 47804 (812) 238-1555 SHCof TerreHaute.com reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Along with the many other services, programs and amenities Signature HealthCARE offers Physical Therapy in PRIVATE Rehab Rooms.
