Brainerd Dispatch • May 21 - 27, 2023 •19 "White Men Can't Jump" (2023) Come together to win it all with the modern remake of the hit 1992 sports comedy "White Men Can't Jump" when the new Hulu Original film premieres Friday, May 19, on the streamer. While the 1992 film starred Woody Harrelson ("True Detective") and Wes- ley Snipes ("Blade," 1998) as the original streetball hustlers, this new iteration stars multi-platinum rap superstar Jack Harlow ("First Class") in his film debut, alongside "American Soul," "Power" and "Teen Wolf" star Sinqua Walls as Jeremy and Kamal. While Jeremy is a former basketball star whose career was stalled by injuries, Kamal is a once-promising player who derailed his own future in the sport. As the pair of hustlers take on the Los Angeles courts, the two — seemingly completely opposite — men learn they may have more in common than they could have ever imagined. From 20th Century Studios, "White Men Can't Jump" is directed by Calmatic ("House Party," 2023), written by Kenya Barris and Doug Hall (both of "Black-ish") and based on the original story by Ron Shelton ("Bull Durham," 1988). Teyana Taylor ("Coming 2 America," 2021), Lance Reddick ("John Wick," 2014), Laura Har- rier ("Spider-Man: Homecoming," 2017), Myles Bull- ock ("BMF"), Vince Staples ("Abbott Elementary"), Zak Steiner ("Euphoria"), Andrew Schulz ("You People," 2023) and J. Alphonso Nicholson ("P-Valley") also star. "Queenmaker: The Making of an It Girl" (2023) Unmask the work of New York's elite with Hulu's new original documentary "Queenmaker: The Making of an It Girl" when it premieres Wednesday, May 17. Offer- ing a fascinating look into the world of Manhattan's wealthiest inhabitants and the now-defunct "Park Avenue Peerage" blog that took New York City by storm, "Queenmaker" looks at the height of the city's "heiress era" of the early aughts. As an anonymous blogger infiltrated Manhattan's elite, bringing socialite celebrity statuses to new heights with their salacious insights, the true identity of the website's creator and mastermind was not who anybody would have ever expected. From director Zackary Drucker ("The Stroll," 2023), the documentary is executive produced by Scott Kaplan ("Stable Wars") and produced by Emmet Mc- Dermott ("White Hot: The Rise and Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch," 2022). "Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" (2023) After taking the big screen by storm in February, this tiny superhero shrinks his way to the small screen when "Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantuma- nia" releases to stream, Wednesday, May 17, on Disney+. This third movie in the Ant-Man franchise marks the official launch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's "Phase 5," with the end of "Phase 4" being 2022's "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." The sequel continues in a world post-Thanos-snap and post-snap-reversal, in which Scott Lang (Paul Rudd, "I Love You, Man," 2009) has been reunited with his daughter, Cassie (Kathryn Newton, "Big Little Lies," replacing Emma Fuhrmann from "Avengers: Endgame," 2019), and his partner, Hope Van Dyne, aka: The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly, "South of Heaven," 2021). This time, the family are joined by Hope's parents – Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas, "Fatal Attraction," 1987) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer, "The First Lady") – as they explore the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange and unfamiliar creatures, as they embark on an adventure that "will push them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible" (per Dis- ney). Directed by Peyton Reed (of both "Ant-Man," 2015, and "Ant-Man and The Wasp," 2018), the film also stars Jonathan Majors ("Creed III," 2023) as Kang and Bill Murray ("Lost in Translation," 2003) as Lord Krylar. "Primo" - Season 1 Catch a slice of Texan life in the new Freevee original series "Primo," premiering on Prime Video Friday, May 19. From creator Shea Serrano ("Hip Hop: The Songs That Shook America"), "Primo" is a single-camera coming-of-age comedy inspired by Serrano's own experiences growing up in San Antonio. The series fol- lows teenager Rafa Gonzales (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, "A Good Person," 2023), who is being raised in the city by his mother, Drea (Christina Vidal, "The Terminal List"), and his five overbearing uncles — Rollie (Johnny Rey Diaz, "Grey's Anatomy"), Mike (Henri Esteve, "Grown- ish"), Ryan (Carlos Santos, "Gentefied"), Jay (Jonathan Medina, "Walker: Independence") and Mondo (Efrain Villa, "Better Call Saul"). As Rafa nears the end of high school, finds the girl of his dreams and works on his very real chance to be the first person in his family to go to college, "Primo" finds Rafa, his family, his friends (and his crush) affecting each other's lives in unex- pected ways, helping them all to grow whether they like it or not. Executive produced by Serrano, Michael Schur ("Parks and Recreation"), David Miner ("Brook- lyn Nine-Nine"), Morgan Sackett ("The Good Place"), Peter Murrieta ("Wizards of Waverly Place") and Lisa Muse Bryant ("Black-ish"), the series also stars relative newcomer Stakiah Lynn Washington, Martin Martinez ("Magnum P.I."), Nigel Siwabessy ("Stop the Bleed- ing!"), Adela Paez ("9-1-1"), Mimi Fletcher ("Waco: The Aftermath"), Melinna Bobadilla ("Orange is the New Black") and Bobby Daniel Rodriguez ("SEAL Team"). "Selling Sunset" - Season 6 The hustle to be the best and brightest in California's luxury real estate market continues when Season 6 of the smash-hit reality series "Selling Sunset" premieres on Netflix Friday, May 19. With new agents, new drama and even more ultra-luxurious properties, this new sea- son promises to come back in with a bang as the crew from The Oppenheim Group bring all of their personal and professional drama to the small screen. As owners and twin brothers Jason and Brett Oppenheim work to stay at the top of L.A.'s high-end real estate world, real estate agents Chrishell Stause, Heather El Moussa, Da- vina Potratz, Mary Fitzgerald, Chelsea Lazkani, Emma Hernan and Amanza Smith return to the screen as they balance their cutthroat work lives with new relation- ships, expanding families and (as always) a wealth of personal drama. And while series regulars Christine Quinn, Maya Vander and Vanessa Villa will not be returning to the cast for the new season, audiences will be treated to the arrival of Bre Tiesi and Nicole Young for Season 6. The series comes from executive producer Adam DiVello, known for his work on fellow drama- packed reality shows "The Hills" and "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County." "Anna Nicole Smith: You Don't Know Me" (2023) What's really in a name? Uncover the story of model and actress Anna Nicole Smith in the unflinching new documentary "Anna Nicole Smith: You Don't Know Me" when it premieres on Netflix Tuesday, May 16. Examining the life, death and secrets of Vickie Lynn Hogan, better known as Anna Nicole Smith, this film takes a humanizing look at the famed Playboy and Guess jeans model from the perspective of those who knew her best. From her first appearance as a model in Playboy magazine in 1992 to her untimely death in 2007, Smith's life was a whirlwind exemplification of the American dream. "You Don't Know Me," which features never-before-seen footage, home movies and interviews with key figures who have not spoken out until now, "reveals new insights into the story of the quintessential blonde bombshell hardly anyone really knew" (per Netflix). Directed by Urusula Macfarlane ("Untouchable," 2019), "Anna Nicole Smith: You Don't Know Me" is executive produced by Caryn Capotosto ("Won't You Be My Neighbor?," 2018), Ami Man- ning ("Paris Hilton's My New BFF"), Suzanne Migdall ("South Beach Academy," 1995), Howard Owens ("30 Days"), Ben Silverman ("The Office") and Luna Wise ("By the Pool," 2018).
