Andrews • maandrews@rutherfordweekly.com It would be totally improper to say anything else but “what a show!” The Charlie Daniels Concert at The Foun- dation this past Thursday was one well oiled conglomer- ation of pure entertainment presented with enthusiasm and unlimited talent. In addition to Charlie, every member of his band was a star in their own right. The Charlie Daniels Band is an ideal collection of musicians. It all got started with me and others visiting Charlie in the Green Room at Isothermal Community College Foun- dation Theatre. He remembered our interview and asked how everything was going. He then autographed a picture to me. I made arrangements to speak with him again. After, I was given a special place to take some pictures as he began the show to a thunderous applause. His music was defi nitely upbeat and with the beginning of any familiar song, the crowd roared its’ approval. After getting some photos stage side, I was given a seat in the third row where I could continue to record history at The Foundation. Charlie Daniels presents a thoughtful, very patriotic and very entertaining venue. He included a special dedication to our Armed Forces: “Those who have served, gave the ultimate sacrifi ce while serving, are now serving and will serve in the future.” His performance also included a spine chilling rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” on fi ddle. It began in the dark as Char- lie walked forward on stage. The fi nal song of more than two hours of entertainment brought down the house. It was “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.” Charlie and me in The Foundation Green Room prior to the show! Charlie and his famous fi ddle (he’s a self taught fi ddler). Charlie sings another song. The big belt buckle he always wears says “Jesus Is Lord”! I lost count of the instruments that kept com- ing on stage and given to Charlie. He plays ev- erything! Also, he is self taught on the fi ddle. What a talent! This man loves to perform and developes a great connection with his audience. After a short while, you sort of get the impres- sion that you are out in the country and on his front porch! To everyone, his music is so per- sonal. It is something to behold! So, here I am watching a man who has been performing for 52 years and is 73 years old with the energy of a teenager on stage. I remember asking Charlie if there was anything that he had not accomplished in his life that he would like to. His answer? “Yes, I’d like to land a ten pound wide mouth bass and get me an eight point buck!” Charlie loves the outdoors. As a performer, I would rate Charlie right at the top. I’ve seen several hundred top artist per- form in my lifetime and Charlie Daniels is now in my top ten.
